Looked at a 4Runner yesterday, and I have a question

I showed up late, as I only wanted to see quality, climate control, as well as ease of entry/egress.

It was also raining, and I didn't want to soak a new car just to fuck with it. As a result, I simply looked at the closest vehicle with the salesman; a 4Runner Limited. This is obviously not the immediate choice for someone who wants to use the vehicle off-pavement... Or is it the foundation of something better?

It's hard to tell, because figuring out options and possibilities in regard to Toyota vehicles only falls short of Ram trucks.

I was shocked to find out that the Limited model; the vehicle they market to an average SUV buyer that will never take the vehicle off-pavement, was the only model available with a torque-biasing, all wheel drive, locking central differential. It's a Torsen T3 arrangement that locks; not identical internally, but essentially the same operation theory as a TruTrac or Quaife unit.

This is superior to part-time four wheel drive; certainly in snow and sand. Why, then, is it not fitted to the TRD Pro?

Would it be a more clever move to buy the TRD Pro, or buy the Limited, get the added luxury as well as the superior differential, and remove the body kit? I'm still not sure if the Limited is available with other off-pavement options (excluding things that can be easily changed, like suspension height and tires). The 4Runner is available with a lot of tech, but it's spread out among the model line.

It's kind of like going into a pizza joint, and finding out that if you want crushed red peppers to sprinkle on top, you MUST order a 15" pineapple Pizza, and if you go for pepperoni, you're stuck with salt. Make the wrong order, and they just leave you with no crust.

What the fuck is the deal with this? What are your opinions? Does anyone know just how swappable Toyota packages and options are, or how easy it would be to swap fascia?

I'm going to have to buy something a little more modern sooner or later, and I just want something that'll freeze my face off in the summer, keep my ass cool, doesn't require personal maintenance when something goes wrong, and ride the occasional trail and perhaps hit the beach; that's IF I get a truck/SUV at all.

Right now, it's all up in the air. I've checked out everything from the Power Wagon to the Fiat 124 Abarth (not fucking bad at all, but rather useless in everyday life) and Honda Clarity (that thing is fucking comfortable as hell). As much as I consider the D5 to be sold at a fair price, I've really no interest in spending nearly eighty grand on a vehicle I'm primarily buying to be a relaxed daily driver and, if I do go 4WD, something capable enough for the occasional rock garden, easy to find off-the-rack mods, and just damned decent on beaches. I don't need that much vehicle.

At some point, I'll want to head south again. I'm not worried about the durability of Toyota vehicles, though I wonder how that sliding rear glass would handle washboards... It's still nice enough as a feature to enjoy until the regulator breaks, though.

Top ten points going toward the 4Runner: All related to ease of fucking use and build quality. Not too much stupidity in there. I was able to locate and operate everything in seconds, and upon second attempt, didn't even need to look at most of the controls.

Not bad. So, what the fuck is going on with that differential only being fitted to the mall crawler?

Cheers,

Kennith

I don't believe you looked at it. If you had, you'd have screamed in horror at its hideous face.

Well, it's not exactly a design triumph. I kind of dig the "Demolition Man" sci-fi look, though. Then again, I like the Jaguar XJS more than the E-Type. So, in the realm of automotive aesthetics, my personal preference is almost always going to be "incorrect".

The only thing that bugs me is the height of the bumper, which I'm thinking must be mandated at this point for any vehicle that isn't some massive truck. Seems everyone is doing it, and it makes it nearly impossible to design a good-looking bumper with easy winch access.

I don't think that's a coincidence. Surely there must be a regulation forcing their hand. Otherwise, nobody would go through the trouble of figuring out how to shape a bumper that reaches from under the body to the bottom of the headlights.

The Tacoma does look a bit better than the 4Runner, though. I just only had time to poke around one vehicle.

Cheers,

You might as well come on here asking about what artisanal soda water is best to pair with your nasturtium salad. Take that elsewhere:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/

I'd rather have a few opinions from here first, no matter how silly they might be.

Despite how pointless some conventional wisdom can be in the Rover world, and how stuck in the mud people generally are in regard to advancement, many of us used to be quite good at this sort of thing.

Add to that perspectives from upstanding overland aficionados such as Garrett, shifty bastards like myself, genius mechanics like Tillery, and so on; hell, you've got a community that might actually be able to answer a damned question from several perspectives.

Not everyone may be here often anymore, but when people do show up... It's a pretty darn good community.

Ask about that stuff on a lot of forums, and nobody even knows how the hell such a differential works, yet they still give advice; forcefully at times. Half the time you don't know if you're talking to a high school kid or an octogenarian. Not judging that particular forum, nor Toyota guys. Most of the people I've hit trails with drove Toyota, Nissan, and Jeep. Overland, obviously I've been surrounded by the damned things.

The problems are the web communities. Sometimes they just don't feel compatible. I'm not close enough to a purchase of anything yet to join another forum.

I also tend to get banned a lot... Can't for the life of me imagine why the fuck that might happen.

Cheers,

Kennith

Hardly. They're both in the running for most stupid looking SUVs.

This begs the question, what do you consider a good looking SUV?

Kennith, I like the 4Runner. I haven't looked at trim lines and options because my next vehicle will be a pickup truck, and I plan on keeping my D1. The reality is in the world of off roading/trail worthy/overland capable SUV's there aren't a whole lot of offerings. I simply can't spend $70k at this point on a Land Rover to explore Colorado, the Ozarks, Kentucky, etc. There's the Jeep Grand Cherokee but its kind of small IMO. The 4Runner seems like the perfect combination of size, price point, and aftermarket support to make it a very good option.

Jiminy cricket. Off the top of my head, I can't think of 1 "modern" "SUV" that doesn't look so much like every other there's any difference worth discussing.
The reality is in the world of off roading/trail worthy/overland capable SUV's there aren't a whole lot of offerings.
Agree. Sad/true.
I simply can't spend $70k at this point...
Yeah. Right there with ya...
There's the Jeep Grand Cherokee but its kind of small IMO.
Once it got all round and metro, the appeal of the GC went straight down hill for me.

I'm a minimum of a year from replacing my '01 Grand Cherokee.
Well, I NEED another year out of her; if she keeps going, I'm keeping her longer.

I liked the Jeep Commander; big boxy-ass bitch.
Jeep stopped making it when they discovered all their Grand Cherokee customers were buying that instead.
Part of that was price, part was size, part was ability.
Jeep shit-canned it, and kept all the least-appealing parts (to me) of the GC; high price, smaller, gayer street racer.

An honest assessment of vehicle needs for me:

It can be small; our entire family is never together any more. At most, there's 2 of us in the same car. Maybe, once a year, 3 of us at once.

AWD at a minimum, 4WD preferred
They actually close highways here in the winter, and you're not allowed on them without M+S rated tires at a minumum

Off-road ability
I haven't been camping in a while. I like to think I'll start camping again on a regular basis. But then there's real life, that keeps interfering with what I'd "like" and what I "wish". The very unfortunate reality is that if I go camping once or twice a year, for the rest of my life, that's really going to be about it. Going camping is really my only chance to go off-road at all.

Style
yeah. Actually, it'll be the least ugly I can find

Manufacturers
American & European are the only ones I'll consider.
I'm a stubborn old fuck, and it's my damned money.

And, obviously, I don't have an unlimited budget.

I'd love to have another RR, I just can't afford a new one, and the ones I CAN afford are way too much work and anxiety.
I'm in love with the Jaguar XJ. It comes in AWD.
That, to me, is a beautiful automobile.
Not that I can afford a new one of those, either.

My wife's Renegade is not my most-hated vehicle.
It's comfy, reasonably-priced, 4WD, and isn't (in my opinion) as ugly as many other vehicles on the road.

Maybe I'll get a couple-year-old Wrangler.
That's actually the direction I'm leaning right now.
It hits most of my checkboxes.

Ill add this:

My coworker has a 5th gen 4runner. He has a hidden winch behind the bumper, sliders and lift. Thats it. He using this shit out of his 4runner.

Off roading - CHeck
Hunting with lots of steep mud - Check
Going Skiing in a blizzard - check
Sales Trips on all pavement - Check
Taking the dogs to the vet - Check
Going downtown with the wife - meh, i think he takes his wifes lexus.

The point is that the 4 runner is a good platform and does many things well. Would I buy one? I dont know, I have two kids. I would rather have a tacoma, but at 6'4" they are too small. I wish a full size half ton truck wasnt too big for the trails here in Colorado. So i keep my disco as my off road truck and my current family hauler is a 2000 Merc e320 Wagon. When the time comes to replace the merc, I will have some tough decisions to make.

I thought we were talking NEW SUV's, not ones that are no longer in production.

So from your list we have a Tahoe, Land Cruiser, Wrangler, 4Runner, and some Acura(Honda CRV). I won't count the Cadillac because its a Tahoe and the Lexus is a Land Cruiser. If I had to pick one of these remaining vehicles it would be the 4Runner. I actually like the way it looks, and it has options/packages available that can actually get it off road. The Wrangler, while capable, is just too commonplace and small for me.

Most of those are current or recent production.

The only reason anyone would buy a Cadillac or Lexus is because they're a fucking moron who wants to pay more for an uglier version of a decent vehicle.

You've got an LR4, D90, RRC, and 4th Gen 4Runner all on your "looks good" list.
