Looking for a coat

Any recommendations on a winter work coat here? I basically want it for working outside (in Jersey). I'd like it to be quite long, and very warm, even on a bitter cold day, but then not make me sweat like a bastrd when I start reasonably active. One condition is that it must be very robust and tear resistant. No need for waterproof as I don't care much for working in the rain.

Cheers,

Dean

Couldn't agree more. Barbour tough as old boots, rear oil, water resistant and you can pad them up if it's Brass monkey weather ot just have a light rain coat! There's a reason British farmers wear them.

I'm actually looking for 2 coats - one first and foremost warm and long, but strong and waterproof too, with a hood, something like the barbour wax duffle coat:

http://www.barbour.com/product/prof...d=0&departmentid=1&categoryid=68&womens=false

Would prefer it with a zip though.

Then I need a jacket, above all else tough, not so hot that I cant work in it. I want to be able to sweat like a pig and not get too wet inside, if thats possible. I need it for logging.

Thanks all, Carhartt or Barbour it is then. Are they both up to someone heaving wood around, scraping and scratching them all day long?

I build fences look after the livestock and wear my Barbour to town. Get a fleece Gilet and it's a great coat for all weathers i would say. Not quite for sub arctic mind but cool. Waterproof, thornproof, diesel proof, horse proof.

And I have to admit to being a bit patriotic here as they are made just up the road for me, so I'm regulalrly in the factory shop. Bargains Galore.

http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens_outerwear/jackets/86073.aspx i bought this coat at the begining of this winter as a previous year closeout and i like it. its not quite as warm as they advertise but with a sweatshirt or a flannel on it will keep me warm down to as cold as it has gotten to this year in salt lake city. it doesnt have much in the way of poofy type insulation. i have not put it through a constant work week repeapidly but it seems like it will hold up well. i had to change all the tires on my disco in the dark and wind last weekend and it did great keeping me warm and rolling around on the ground. its got lots of pockets and an arm poket for a mini mag and pens. it blocks the wind pretty well and has pit zips for when its warmer. i like it for work around the house as it has lots of pockets to put tools and fasteners and stuff into. definitly not as elegant or timeless as a Barbour coat but not as expensive either.

Carhartt is damn near indestructible. Their clothing will hold up to anything you can think of, and is designed for heavy labor and lots of abrasion. You can get as fancy as you want with more expensive "country clothing", but on the roof, in the forest, under the car, beside the framework, and behind the mig gun, those who do not wish to work partially naked wear Carhartt.

They have clothes for all weather.

I should add as well, however,

That most people don't need all that durability, and will be fine with something else. There is really no substitute for their durability, though in a harsh environment. If lots of abrasion is not an issue, I like waxed cotton. I own a nice properly designed duster made of the stuff that I love. I use it for logging and burning. It's great in the rain, which works for me because I usually burn at night when it's raining.

Nearest Barbour for me is in PA. The one I want is $700, hmm.

I did pick up a carhartt and its very nice, but I still want a waterproof coat as well. Still looking into Filson or Barbour

Thanks - I'll let you know. I looked at the Filson waxed canvas coats, they are nice but they are not lined, the liner is another $100+. Are the Barbours at least warm?

I have the Barbour Beaufort jacket. I wear it usually with a heavy wool sweater and its warm down to around 25-30F. I have the fleece liner that I will only use when it is under 20F.

I know that the Barbours are durable jackets, but when it comes time to work on the truck or outdoor chores I wear my old beatup Carhartt.

I agree with Mike, Carhart for ruff work but I wear my Beaufort any other time, enough that it is too far gone to repair, and i drop it off to the Barbour US HQ here in NH..... so waiting for new one to come in from Atlantic British, as the Barbour HQ don't sell to individuals only authorized sellers.... but i can try on anything to check for size etc......
