LOL!

Nothin' big, just fixin' a problematic tree..... ;)

The wife can't handle a real tree in the house, so we have to use an artificial. Yuck, but, oh well..... Have to say, though, we've had this thing for 16 years, and it still looks good. But, several years ago, the base died. Well, you can find a base for a real tree, but I couldn't find a base for an artificial tree w/o buying a whole new one. But, I finally found a base that would work... it's plastic, with a large cylinder section in the middle for holding water, and has two sets of the four screws, one set high and one set low.... by running them all the way in, I could get it to hold the tree up.

Well, the thing was designed for a live tree, which has a larger trunk than that of the fake center post. The lower set, of screws, when run all the way to the center, skew off a bit, and you have to be careful or it'll skate out past the post, and the tree will tilt over. Well, Laura put up the tree this year instead of me.... I don't know how careful she was, and I'm not gonna say anything to her about it, but I don't think she had them lined up quite right.. . Anyway, the other night, the tree dumped over on her, while I was out running errands. Not cool....

So, after I got home she asked me if I could fill the base with quickcrete.... sure it could be done, and, I didn't see any reason why not too, and, it would fix the problem.... so, I got the center pole adjusted to vertical, added quickcrete and water, let it cure all day.... the stuff would be ready within an hour or so, but there wasn't any need to rush it.... Sure, gravel may have worked well enough, but it was one of those situations, she said quickcrete, she got quickcrete....

So, I've got the tree back together, awaiting to have the lights re-strung on it, ornaments put back on, etc. Get to do it all over again, a week after we had done it the first time.... :banghead: lol....

At least, it won't be going over again.....

Did you break the news to Rusty that he's not getting a pool because you aren't getting your Christmas bonus? Also, that the family won't be able to make it to Wally World next summer.

...so, you do the math. How long do I have to wait to get my oil changed? 52k? Is that the next one? Why wait? Because they told me that they need to do all the work on the vehicle in order to keep it under warranty
That's absolutely not true. There was actually a court case brought and won by car owners that anyone can change the oil. As long as you have receipts for it, the warrantee is still good. In fact you can do the oil change yourself as long as you keep the receipts and document the work in your service book. You also don't have to use OEM oil filters.

Anyone know how to contact Fritz Liebig, the author of the original post on this topic? I've tried sending him an e-mail as per his instructions but received no response. I'm guessing his quest for vehicle #8 is over. Anyway, I'm the owner of SHO #8.

To answer a few questions that were raised on this topic...

When the vehicle was spotted at REI, I just took posession of the vehicle and was preparing for a lengthy off-road run. The jerry cans were full and I was headed out of town. The vehicle calls enough attention to itself and has enough wind resistance and high CG that I don't normally keep the assesories on the rack unless I intend to use them. I do use the jerry cans and the tent, which are the only things that have ever been on the rack since the vehicel was outfitted by Land Rover. As for some of the criticism about the vehicle, I would simply say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Aside from some decals I wouldn't have put on it myself, I don't see anything different about the vehicle's assesories that most off-road enthousiasts wouldn't have on their vehicle - a winch, some off-road lights, a snorkel, and a rack with jerry cans. Okay, the tent is perhaps a bit unusual but not totally out in left field. I guess I missed the point as to why there was any criticism at all. On the positive side, the vehicle is capable and gets me to my trailheads so I can do my favorite things like long distance hiking, exploring, and generally getting out of the rat race. It's exactly what I needed so I'm happy with it. It could have wound up at Busch Gardens as a display piece (as Anheuser Busch corporation attempted to buy it) but that just wouldn't have been fair to the truck.

Nosivad,

To be honest, I get a lot of comments from people who walk up to me to enquire about the vehicle. Most want to know if the vehicle is for real or just the product of an overactive imagination set loose. The graphics on the vehicle, I believe, is the most conspicuous thing about it. I get two types of inquiries - people who are curious about Parkinsons research and the vehicle's role in it and those who are curious about the vehicle's unusual appearance with little interest beyond that. One lady asked "why would you buy a vehicle with writing all over it?" Certainly, some may think that I'm all about flash and ego for owning the vehicle. Actually, they couldn't be farther from the truth. I'm generally a quiet person who doesn't enjoy the spotlight. My idea of excitement is watching the sun rise over a cup of fresh brewed camp coffee. If I get tired of watching that, I rotate my camp char 90 degrees and change the channel.

My wife works full time in medical research. When we purchased the vehicle we had a full appreciation for the vehicles history and significance in medical research so it appealed to us on that level. Of course, I would be dishonest to to say that all of the assesories didnt' appeal to us too, given that we are both die-hard outdoor enthousiasts.

My wife and I seize any opportunity to encourage people who might walk up and talk to us to contact the Parkinson's institue and make a donation. In that respect the vehicle continues to raise funds long past it's intended show time.

The vehicle has definitely been a good match for our lifestyle and I would like to believe that we are a good match for it.

Thanks for posting lyleh...
I just sent you an e-mail directly. Glad to have found #8. I'll put it up on the site if you send me some pics, and a short bio.

Digging out an old post:
Yes you did, the '04 TReK event trucks were "pre release '04s". They had the CDL and 4.6 and whatever other doo-dads the '04s had.

Tami got pics of this truck today. It's pretty well beat. Drivers fender was peeled open like a can opener, windshield was busted, dent across the hood where it looks like the ARB got in to it, passengers side rear quarter bent up, missing lights, missing decals......

I have no idea what number this is, but it's ragged.
