Hey Guys,
New member here. Love the forum from what I have seen so far. Im a newbie when it comes to Rovers. I was going to ask for some advice before I take the plunge into getting a Disco 1. I had it lined up to purchase a 97 XD, but it fell through a couple hours before the transaction was to take place. I have found a 1996 D1 that I am going to look at tomorrow afternoon. The owner says it needs a starter, headliner, tailight, and some other small cosmetic items. The motor runs great and has been well maintained. They have kept all records/receipts for the car as well. Mileage was around 140,000. What kind of price would you guys pay for what I just described? Given the issues to fix, what type of price would you estimate fixing it would be? Also anymore special points to look at while Im inspecting it? Anymore help would be great. Thanks guys!

Eh. Not a fan of the 96 to early 97 model years because the parts are more expensive than the mid 97 to 99 d1s.

huh? while not a fan of '96 just because first year GEMS motor in a Disco, don't think there is any difference in parts between "96 - '99 DI's? i do agree on price though. maybe $2500 if it is immaculate other than those issues mentioned.

I wouldn't go higher than $1500. The headliner probably is worth replacing. Almost all seem to sag at some point. The starter shouldn't be too bad to source (don't know price). The tail lights are even easier. There are numerous people (including myself) that are selling parts.

Things to look for....leaks, leaks, leaks. Also check coolant levels. Check the oil for moisture (head gasket leaks). CDL linkage working (easy fix but a bargining tool if not). Rotoflex condition. Rust on frame, inside rear door wells and around tail lights. I'm sure there are many more things that I'm forgetting.

Oh yeah...welcome to the madness:bigok:

The mid 97 to 99 have u-joint driveshaft, carbon cutting valves, AEL and cheaper oxygen sensors.

He is asking $2600 for the truck, but he said he has lots of wiggle room. I figured 2k even would be a good offer, if not less. Thanks for the advice guys.

If you're not in a hurry...keep looking for the right truck. I'm not saying this isn't a good truck. But you'll be spending some time & money right off the bat.

Be prepared to accept that as part of the buying process. I recently got a screeming deal because the seller was naive. I've been slowing repairing and replacing little issues for the past month.
