Low fuel pressure recurring even after new pump and tank

Finally able to check the pressure again during a road test. SURPRISE!!! Pressure is now staying on spec during whole test.

Problem is still there.:smilelol:

Having solved the loss of fuel pressure issue, I'm wondering why I still have massive power loss (with no codes or misfires) after warmup?

Working with my faithful ex-LR tech and a willing donor Disco, we go to the spark side of the fuel+air+spark=bang equation:

  • Swap in a known healthy ECU > no fix
  • Check all spark plug leads and plugs >no fix, plugs look uniformly fine
  • Swap in a known healthy coil pack >no fix
:banghead:

Tech is thinking timing issues, I'm OUT of ideas. Cam position sensor is removed and inspected. Oil fouled due to leaks and connections are loose. He cleans and tightens connections. As part of getting the cam position sensor out, the fan and belt need to be removed.
Seeing my large oil leak at the front main, he decides to replace the seal and save me some future grief. Finds my harmonic balancer has a 1" crack right through beside the keyway next to the crank surface.

Harmonic balancer ordered; (www.roverparkboys.com ROCK!) the tech is still thinking. Decides to take a look at the crank position sensor at the back above the catalytic converter where it gets nice and warm.
Removes the crank position sensor and finds the aluminum mount split in half.:victory:

Crappy that its more parts, but good that this would definitely tell the ECU false news about the crank position and create serious timing issues that could magnify under heat soak.

So now I'm in for a harmonic balancer (that would suck to have it break while driving) and a crank position sensor. I thank God that I have found an ethical LR tech who has said he will not be billing me full time for the diagnostic hours done so far as he hadn't found the problem and who had the foresight to pull the front main seal while he was there and found the cracked balancer.

Parts came in today, I'll update with news as I have it.

I'm still going thru all this with my '97. Loses all power after warming up but I have traced it to bank B leaning way out in closed loop operation, but can't seem to find the cause. I can't wait to see what fixes your truck, I'm about to dump this one from my collection.

I read that you have checked the fuel pressure. I had a problem with random dying and no start on my 96 Disco. Sometimes it would start and sometimes not. I checked the fuel pressure at different times and sometimes it would have good pressure and sometimes none. I finally traced it to a loose electrical plug on the fuel pump. The harness plug clicked in solidly to the fuel pump, but wasn't engaging enough to have good current sometimes. I could sit there and move the plug around with my finger and make it run well or die depending on the pressure applied to the plug. I just wired it on tightly and have never had a problem since. Just checking voltage at the plug was not enough to diagnose this, nor applying voltage directly to the pump. This is worth checking.
