FYI: I have found a good heavy duty off-road battery that will fit perfecetly in the LR3. It is the PC1700MJT from Odyssey (http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1700mjt.htm). It smaller but a lot more powerful then the D31M from Optima that is two inches too tall. I was quoted $200 for the batery, not bad.

Here are some specs from their site:
PC 1700MJT Specs:

1700 cranking amps for 5 seconds
1540 cranking amps for 10 seconds
1355 cranking amps for 20 seconds
68 amp hours
Short circuit current over 3500A
142 minute reserve capacity with 25amp load
With metal jacket and SAE automotive terminals
Length 13.02"
Width 6.62"
Height 7.68" including terminals
Weighs 60.9 lbs

Hope this helps,
Nomad

I used the Duralast from Autozone: H8-DLG, 950 CA, 100 reserve, with 3 yr replacement, 8 year pro-rata. It is about 2" longer, but fits w/o a problem.

$129.00

I custom fit the bigger 2150 from Odyssey into the 2nd battery location. All we had to do was move a bracket forward and cut out the end of the plastic box. 200 minutes ! $300! Runs the arb fridge for days - not sure how many as the arb is so efficient and that 2150 lasts so long.

The trick would be to have enough solar array input to keep the batteries fine indefinitely - a tricky proposition if in alaska mid winter, although you wouldn't need a fridge then either!

If you find the right group size, get a Diehard Platinum from your local Sears. They are basically rebadged Odyssey batteries, but 40% cheaper.

That's good to know, but are they the same in every way concerning quality and longevity?

I just bought a Maxx-94R from Wal Mart for $75 to replace the factory original battery. It is the exact same size with the same top configuration. The factory vent tube and fitting also fit perfectly. The label on the Maxx says it was produced by Johnson Controls. Given that most if not all maintenance-free batteries like the factory one now have lead calcium, I assume the Maxx is the same. Warranty is 3 yrs free replacement and 90 months pro-rated. Point is you don't have to spend $300 for a simple replacement. I had also checked with my local AutoZone and their 94R-DLG (Duralast Gold produced by Johnson Controls and identical to the Maxx) was $143.99.

I am now considering installing an auxiliary battery in the available space on the opposite side. My LR Dallas dealer has the long bolts and bracket for $12.86. The space will accept the Maxx-78S with side posts or the Maxx-48 with top posts. Both are also $75.00. I'm still trying to decide on the type of isolator given that the alternator seems to be a two-stage 90/150 amp high output. Any feedback would be appreciated.

How has this battery held up for you?
Anyone else buy the Odyssey?

NAPA also offers an option. I think it's a re-badged Interstate since it runs the same price (~$155) and has same specs and size.

Nice to see a few more distribution options popping up.
