for outright off-roading capability in stock form, which one has the upper hand?

just curious.

Are the actual guts of the two that much different? I just assumed suspension and chassis were pretty much the same, kind of like a RRC and a D1 level of differences.

assume a driver who will only be limited by the capability of the vehicle, in other words, one who takes the perfect line every time and applies the perfect amount of throttle every time, etc...

In that case, I say RRS, because I saw a black one today in Waynesboro at the old Western Sizzlin'. Holy Smokes, Batman, that thing is sexy!!

In lust for the RRS, though not entirely convinced about the rear view.....funny not convinced about the rear view of the LR3 either....

Yeah they are the same platform, but, because the D3/LR3 is more the 'world car' -a 'base' D3 doesn't even have air suspension or TRS (they don't sell them here), so it might have more goodies coming out for it in the future... Like the new ARB roo-bar which just came out and looks great. As the RRS is very high end in every market, I dont see off road goodies coming out for it anytime soon. The D3/LR3 is also HUGE inside compared to the RRS.. the third row seats are actually comfortable. But, damn the RRS looks awesome.

At that old Sizzlin', now something like "Jake's Rib House" or something like that. Right at the corner of Lew Dewitt and 340. It was parked in the "owners" spot. Solid black.

The LR3 has better off-road capability because the RRS is lower. It is a 'Sport' model, not intended for off-roading.

The RRS has a slight advantage over the LR3 in weight but in reality both are REALLY heavy which presents problems off-road. At 5700 lb the LR3 and RRS are approaching the weight of a Suburban. Not many Suburbans go outright off roading.

Who says the Sport is not intended for off-roading? That is very untrue. In fact the Sport is slightly better off road than the LR3. They are on the same platform, but the RRS is shorter. It has a shorter wheelbase and slightly better approach and departure angles.

I've had a chance to drive every new Land Rover product since 95, and the LR3 and RRS are by far the most capable vehicles Land Rover has ever built. In stock form, the LR3 and RRS will do nearly everything a stock Defender will do (and some things the D90 can't), and do it much easier.

Just my opinion from my own experiences.

I definitely think they are made for off-roading......now, if I could afford a brand new one, I'm not sure it would be getting this muddy....but they can do it.

I've got another cool pic around here somewhere....it's the one of my dreams....

Noee--I'm going by there tonight to see!! ;)

When is comes to drivetrain and vehicle systems the LR3 and RRS are identical. As for dimensions the LR3 has .6 inches more of ground clearance than the RRS. As for angles of approach, breakover, and departure the LR3 wins, but only by roughly 3 degrees.

Both of these vehicles are equally capable off-road. The true difference, and this is generally true, is the driver. You can have a completely tricked out D2 with lockers, 3-Stage SG suspension, and all the gadgets and still get stuck because of lack of skill and experiece whereas somebody that knows proper off-road driving techniques and the limits of their stock vehicle will not.

The LR3 comes standard with rear locker right? Does the RRS have any locker?

Let's be honest though when ford set out to design the LR3 and the RRS, off road capability was not priority number one, or two or three. This may just be me but I believe the focus of Land Rover has shifted slightly (still capable) but more in line to compete with vehicles like porsche cayenne, X5, Benz and others. It seems to me that by having these vehicles driven by computers they ride smoother, remain capable but lack some of the extreme off road prowess I think existed in prior models. They needed to be competitive and I think they have done this, well.

Agreed, I wish LR would stay a little more focused on off road ability. About the lockers, centre diff lock standard on LR3, rear diff lock part of the heavy duty package....which includes a full size spare! HA!
