I think the answer is yes - there was a gent named Mike Findlay who (IIRC) used PTO output to drive a hydraulic pump for his Milemarker winch.
I'd be also curious if a big honking electric motor could be mated to it, too.

Thanks pm. Your guess on gear selection? Neutral on LT230, autobox in 1st? Would want to be certain the gearboxes were getting oiled properly.

You might know this already, but installing a PTO on a Discovery will take some bodywork to achieve. Here is a post I wrote up on another forum. I have a manual trans but I'm guessing position of the LT230 is the same/nearly the same for the autobox since the rear prop shafts don't change between transmission types?

PTO runs on the transmission input shaft speed. The LT230 will splash lubricate itself. Assume the autobox oils just as well at any speed?

Thanks for this. Good to hear from someone who has done it. I am aware of the sheet metal modifications involved. It's interesting how many variants of the PTO unit exist. Your's having an offset configuration while others I've seen in photos being in line (straight back from the LT230).
I'm not sure why but I can't get my head around the autobox part. I imagine it would be like nosing up to an immovable wall, putting the car in 1st (or 3rd), and walking away. The tcase input shaft wouldn't spin while the torque converter wasn't locked up. But I don't know...

An awesome write-up!

Without lockup there would be some slip, but the LT230 input shaft is still being driven so the PTO will also.
