Found a good one and a solution for some of you with flashing M&S lamps. I Scoured the internet and found only one mention of this failure so i thought I would share. Knowing and having seen most all of the common issues that cause this faiult with flashing M&S lamps (grounds, neutral safety/xyz switch, battery, alternator...) I went through everything all checked out good.
So fast foreward. I found the harness had rubbed though on the top of the transfer case and broke wires in the harness.
2003 discovery M&S lamps flashing and going into limp home when placed in drive. (this failure can happen in any shift range selection depending on wire that was compromised.)I clear faults and can switch from Park, reverse and neutral without fault. When drive was selected it would fault the neutral switch. having a spare switch i swapped it in and got the same results. I was able to get live data from the instrument pack and that gave me W,X,Y and Z readings. These are voltages coming from the switch in a combination of wires to tell the computer what gear is selected (see Rave manual for spec)
So with all that i constantly had no Z signal from the switch in any position. I ended up pulling out the transmission harness to inspect it (really easy to take it out) From under the car rear of transfer case you can pull down on the harness to get the grommet loose from the floor. Remove window switch panel in center consul to access, and you can see the harness loose on passenger side. Disconnect 3 connectors and feed down through the grommet hole. from under car disconnect the 3 connectors on the top of the passenger side of the transfer case and the 2 connectors on the drivers side of the transmission and your harness is free.
Once out I still could not see the break in the harness and used a DVOM and pinned out the harness to find the open wire from the switch to the consul. Once i found the wire with the open Since I still could not visually see the cut(and I have fancy tool laying around) i broke out the Power Probe Short Tester to isolate it (If you dont have fancy tool you can just start removing the corregation and tape to find the break)
I cut open the harness at this point and voila, the harness was cut from rubbing on top of the transmission.
I will post up pics and Hopefully this helps others who might be experiencing this issue.
