Hello all, (98 D1 205,500 miles)
Thought I had a bad u-joint (wish I had a bad u-joint), but upon further investigation I've found the problem to be "something" in the transfer case. Here's the story....

-bad vibration pretty much any speed over 20 mph

-terrible metalic noise when coming on/off the gas

-removed front drive shaft....same condition

-put rear of truck on jack stands, locked the center diff, ran the truck and isolated the noise to the transfer case. (yah, I layed underneath of it while it was running)

Now some questions.....

-should I put the front shaft back in and run it with the rear shaft removed?

-should I just cut to the chase and put another transfer case in it?

-can the transfer case be "worked on" while installed?

Suggestions or thoughts???? I would really appreciate some opinions as I don't want to be down to one vehicle for too long.......

Thanks in advance........

dunno if there's a TC rebuild kit around, but I know there ARE TC's available for purchase, used, obviously. Take that sucker out, disassemble it, and get a new one.

bump for any other thoughts on troubleshooting before I rip this thing out....

If I put the front shaft back in and remove the rear shaft will this tell me anything? Just trying to minimize the time under the truck!!

Pull the rear shaft and run it w/ the CDL locked and the truck off the ground. Noise could be from the rear diff and traveling up the shaft.

X2 on a look inside without pulling the t-case first...you could take off the pto cover and get a look inside that way too...check your fluid for metal...you mighta ate a bearing or gear or eating one...emergency brake working?...maybe a prob or something loose there?....

Thanks for all of the replies............It ended up being the rear u-joint on the rear prop shaft..........Couldn't detect it until I removed the prop shaft........

Special thanks to Paul Grant........great guy and offered some great advice. Called me and walked me through some options if I needed a transfer case.........nice to know that I have a good indy guy here in Connecticut.............
