I totally remember now. You know, I had my code reader in my truck and was going to quickly clear Ryan's three amigos so he could get his traction control back. The traffic got crazy in there for a bit and never got to it. It was tough winching him even with the snatch block and being anchored to Jimmy's 90.
Russ, unfortunately your code reader won't clear abs codes. It was nice to meet you and your wife. Too bad we didn't get out together.

Well I finally got home about 4 on Sunday. The reason is the belt shredded on the tow vehicle so I had to wait for the parents to drive out of Powhatan with a replacement. Thanks Ian for leaving me.

Any way I had a great time for my first mar. The beast did good and had no major break downs. I now see that I deffentially need to get lockers front and rear. Here is a clip of a lot of video that Ian and I recorded. I am hoping to edit it over fall break since school is a little crazy right now and I forgot to do some home work.

Here is a short clip of Noee in his series on Friday night showing everyone how its done. I sadly had to winch out but then again the wall had changed by the time I got there.

Let me know if anyone wants to do any trail riding in Va or when the work days are. Its no big deal to throw the beast on the triller and show up.

It seems like ever since you could buy a Range Rover or Discovery for less than $4000 that this event has become more about truck bashing than Land Rover enthusiasts! You just dont see the same mentality anymore... there isnt the same appreciation for the marque as in years past. I'm not sure I'll go next year. Its getting to the point where it isnt worth the 12 hour drive.
I'm interested to hear why you feel this way. I was at MAR from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday late and I thought there was very little "truck bashing" as you call it, and I think I know which trucks you're referring to...
Very nice pics BTW.

Galen, there's a few with my truck in there. Would it be possible to get them in hi res?

I'll see if he sends me a CD or something.

Big Red: Not sure about the FLS. He mentioned a column the photographers do, but I don't think there will be a big story spread or photos.

"Muffy, Buffy, Biff jr., and I are taking our rover and going home!"

Just kidding I couldn't resist. I didn't make it this year but God willing will be there next year for sure. Things still haven't settled down since mil. retirement.

Cheers,

Mike

The red Range Rover is Mark (I forget his last name). He is very good friends with Eric at Atlantic British. If you give him a call he can fill you in. The tan Defender is Scott Preston. Both of these guys are friends of mine and I can pass along a thank you if you want!

Re: the "truck bashing" comment... I run events for our Rover club here in the northeast and lets just say that dudes jumping their trucks over berms and the whole outfit in the "Ciro" Range Rover would have been removed from the event if they didnt get their actions under control. It really is only a matter of time until somebody gets badly hurt at this rally. You have people behind the wheel of 6000 pound vehicles driving them like they are in an arena for monster truck racing. But then, on the other hand, you have families with young children and dogs standing nearby.

Dont get me wrong, I love MAR and theres a reason why I do make the 12 hour trip to get there. But every year I'm there, I see something that makes me very uncomfortable from a safety perspective. And as RRs and Discos are getting cheaper, there seems to be a growing element that thinks its just another 4x4 to put a body lift and huge tires on and go thrash in the woods... like it doesnt matter if its a Jeep, Toyota, Chevy, or a Rover. Where did the appreciation of a Land Rover RALLY go? Thats all I'm saying.

And before you tear into me about being an elitist bastard, my primary off roader at the moment is a Jeep, I have owned a Toyota or two in the past, and dont draw party lines when it comes to what you drive only how you drive it!

Adam,
I think you're trying to place MAR into the same category as a small club event. MAR cannot event try to compete with a small club event. If you don't like the way MAR is handled or think it's just too dangerious, maybe the Spring Rally is more your speed.

I mean really, MAR had over 300 trucks this your; that's a lot. The trails at MAR are "good" at best. There is nothing challenging, at all, and frankly is get quite boring after your 10th lap around the track. By the end of the 2nd day the trail are bound to get a little more "crazy" with people trying new lines, rolling a faster pace, and even the occasional "Fuck it, I'll try it" attitude. These people, too, are having fun. A lot of the stuff you seem to have a problem with is petty. You may have one or two Yahoo's at the event doing some silly stuff, but that's where education comes into play....not bashing the event as a whole.

Your comments do have a little merit, though. Yes, the trucks are getting cheaper and you're only going to see more and more Rovers beat up and on the harder trails. Is that really a problem, though? I have two trucks; one beat to crap; the other really clean. I see beauty in both.

Not everyone is going to like your style of wheeling, Adam. And, not everyone is going to want a expedition style truck.

I will say, though, the location of MAR has been beat to death. It's time to move on, IMO. The land needs time to recover and the event needs a new face for a few years. For a lot of people MAR is "that event" they do not want to miss. It's not because of the trails or even the location....it's the social aspect of things that makes MAR what it is. But, the event continues to grow and we are seeing a lot of bigger built trucks who want to see another level of trail difficulty. There has been some mention of moving the event to a new location but nothing set in stone to date. But if ROAV does in fact move the event to the location that's been discussed, I think a lot of the problem you bring up would be solved. It's a place where you could have your trails and the big boys could have theirs, too.

But, enough about a new location.......thats exciting information to share later.

Point is, MAR is a big event; double the size of any other North American event. If MAR were held in the UK, crash helmets would be standard equipment. If you're looking for a smaller, more civil group, the Spring Rally might be what you're looking for.
