Blew my rear diff on a '98 Disco:
-Crown and Pinion Shot
-Housing Cracked
-Diff gears missing teeth
-Cross Shaft in 4 pieces

Is it worth sourcing the parts and rebuilding it? Is it worth the time?

I was able to pick up a crown and pinion set for $60 at MAR and I can get the rest for under $400.

that sucks...however, i have a stock housing that you can have for free! the ring and pinion are shot (grooves/whinning) but the spiders are ok! maybe you can use the housing to upgrade to a tt/detroit or something!

it in eastern ky if you are anywhere near i could possibly meet you somewhere or shipping was $50 on a new 3rd i got but i could gut it and make it cheaper (but id rather ship it whole)...i just dont like seeing good metal go to waste!

let me know

Did it on the Hill Climb by the Causeway on Friday Afternoon at MAR. I was taking it easy on the gas because I just put on 235/85 and didn't want to break anything until I saved some money for upgrades.

I was thinking about ARB and I am waiting to get a price from GBR on Monday. Also waiting on price for a used diff.

Barefoot, Depending on the costs with upgrading I would be interested in the diff. I will PM tomorrow when I find out costs for ARB

Just buy a used one. They sell for <150.00 for the entire 3rd member.

Did you make it up without getting into the gas? I know that I had to get on my pig to get up hill climb on thursday night, and that was after it had only been raining for a few hours.

Nope didn't make it up without the gas which is why I broke the diff. (too much at wrong time) I made it up both hills on the east river trail, had lunch and then decided to do the hill climb. Live and learn.

The MAR was hard on diff's this year I sold every one I had or could get on consignment while I was there. I wish I had 10 more the way guys needed them.

Rebuild my stock one about 2 years ago...first time for me (with an experienced mechanic and a 12 pack). It took us something like 8 hours+...upgrade the thing. In retrospect, I should've done a Detroit myself.

Thanks. The ashcroft pegging on the diff is interesting. I might have to play around and try to do it myself. Will probably end up of purchasing a used one and then rebuild the one I broke for experience.

I can't afford to change the ratio in the both diffs right now and buy an arb for the rear which is what I would like to do.

Thanks for all the input

I am wondering what keeps the thrust pad in place.... Is it just the pressure pushing it against the ring gear? Is there holes in it for the screws? I would assume so, but can't tell for sure. Any ideas?

The way I understand the description on the website the screw ends are pointed and they register in a matching countersunk hole in the pad. All of which is held in place between the crown gear and taped screws. Just a guess though
