MAR Damage

That's what I thought... just wasn't sure. I can see why you need to keep them snug.

The way I understand the description on the website the screw ends are pointed and they register in a matching countersunk hole in the pad. All of which is held in place between the crown gear and taped screws. Just a guess though

Blew my rear diff on a '98 Disco:
-Crown and Pinion Shot
-Housing Cracked
-Diff gears missing teeth
-Cross Shaft in 4 pieces

Is it worth sourcing the parts and rebuilding it? Is it worth the time?

I was able to pick up a crown and pinion set for $60 at MAR and I can get the rest for under $400.

Just came across this post in a search where you the guy in the Red Disco with the home made trailer near the entrance? If so I think we helped you recover the trailer on Saturday.

Hope you got it fixed.

I have a stock center, just the center not the r and p or assembly.

Cheap.

How is this accomplished? Would you disconnect one of the drive shafts?

Buddy, yep that was me. Thanks for pulling out the trailer on Sunday. Yea, I got a used diff and replaced it about 2 1/2 weeks later. I pulled the axles and the rear prop shaft and drove around in front wheel drive. I am currently rebuilding the old diff for shits and giggles.

I don't know if I cause any damage to the trans but it has taken a shit on me as well. It is delayed shifting but works fine if I manually shift thru the gears. I am buying a used trans from Will Tillery and will swap and then rebuild the trans for some more shits and giggles.

Thanks Ron but I picked a 3rd up. It came with the 3 bolt roto flange and it was PITA to get it off and replace with U-joint 4-bolt flange. It turned a 2 hour job into 2 evenings after work.

I don't think running it on just the front axle would damage the transmition maybe the transfer case but with the rear shaft out I don't see how having it in diff lock could effect anything. Unless you meant just the hill climb. But then again I'm new to Disco's but never had a problem with it on my series truck. Even had a friend that drove his 1100 miles on just the front axle. You have to love a series truck for that sort of thing.

How many miles do you have on it? I'm just curious because I just picked up a 97 Disco that has never really seen any off roading other then on the beach and maybe on a camp ground. It has around 118k on it. Runs and drive good though. Once I sell my other car I plan on putting a 2" lift and a winch on it. I also plan on keeping enough in reserve to replace a diff or two and maybe some other parts like the axles or transfercase. Once I start taking it off road I'm sure something will give way. Especially at Uhwarrie here in NC they have some rocky trails there. snaped a rear half shaft on my series there.

If all goes well I should have it at the MAR next year providing they have it but then again they always say they might not have it after everything gets tore up.

Yes that was the concensus about locked cdl hurting the transmission. I don't believe in coincidences though. Never had a problem with the trans., drove it for 2 1/2 weeks with locked cdl and then it started delay shifting. Fluid is good. Could be a combination of a minor problem I didn't notice that new larger tires and MAR made worse?? Will had such a good price on a used Trans. that by the time I continued playing around diagnosing I could swap in a day and be back on the road (it is a daily driver)

It is a 98 with about 110,000 miles. 90k+ from me. I have had no major problems with it. Minor normal stuff, mostly related to upgrades. It has been a dependable truck.

They said the same thing about MAR last year. I thought there was more damage in the fields last year than this year.

I'm no mechanic, but can't you just pull the rear driveshaft and lock the transfer case? (planning how to get home when it happens to me.)

Yes you can depending on how tore up the rear is you might have to remove the half shafts also. But those are easy to pull at least they are on a series. I'm thinking disco's are similar.

I first pulled the half shafts first because I thought that is what I broke. Pretty much same on the disco except with the alloy wheels you need to take them off first to get to the half shafts. I then pulled the propshaft so in case whatever was broken in the diff jammed or siezed I would not damage the t-case or transmission etc. as I was driving home. I locked the cdl and had a front wheel drive for 2 1/2 weeks.

Now with the trans problem i am driving around manually shifting from 1st - drive and back. I feel like I am driving a kharman gia semi-auto
