We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?
Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., USA, Chairman of the the Joint Chiefs of Staff
during the assault on Grenada, 1983

I come in peace, I didn't bring artillery. *But I am pleading with you with tears in my eyes: *If you fuck with me, I'll kill you all.
Marine General James Mattis, to Iraqi tribal leaders

There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army

You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are.

Royal Marine quotes,

MURPHY'S LAWS OF COMBAT
Tim Grenville-Cleave

You are not supermen. (Freshly graduated Para recruits and all fighter pilots, especially take note.)
Suppressive fire - won't
If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.
Don't look conspicuous - it draws fire.
When in doubt, empty the magazine.
Never share a trench with anyone braver than you.
Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
No plan survives the first contact intact.
All five second grenade fuses will bum down in three seconds.
Try to look unimportant, because the enemy may be low on ammunition.
If you are forward of your position, the artillery will fall short.
When you have secured an area, don't forget to tell the enemy.
Incoming fire has the right-of-way.
The enemy diversion you are ignoring is the main attack.
The important things are always simple.
The simple things are always hard.
The easy way is always mined.
If you are short of everything except enemy, you are in combat.
No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection.
No inspection-ready unit has ever passed combat.
If the enemy is in range, SO ARE YOU!
Friendly fire - isn't.
Things that must be together to work usually can't be transported together.
Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support.
Anything you do can get you shot - including doing nothing.
Make it too tough for the enemy to get in, and you can't get out.
Tracer works BOTH ways.
The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will have more than your fair share to take.
When both sides are convinced they are about to lose, they are both right.
Professional servicemen are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs.

A RM favorite.'If your going through hell, then keep on going' - Sir Winston Churchill

An old Royal Marines epitaph.

O'Lord, I've not been too careful, In the things I've said and done, I've boasted too much of my nights on the spree, And the games of Pontoon I've won.

But I've always done my duty, No matter where it may be, Ashore with the Gallant Commando's, Or out with the Fleet at Sea.

So when Gabriel blows his last trumpet, And the reaper, his harvest doth glean, Remember, if I've been a sinner. At least God I've been a Marine.

FYI
Chosin Reservoir was where the 41 Commando Royal Marines was awarded The Presidental Unit Citation

It's also where 1st Marine Division decimated 9 PLA divisions (to the point where they never reconstituted during the active hostilities) as they walked out to naval shipping, picking up stragglers from a variety of units along the way.

Royal Marines are a fantastic organization; it's a shame their country has little/no amphibious capability to use them anymore.

I always liked this one:

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”

Will have to say that there is a BIG difference between the USMC (as a whole) and the Royal Marines.

It's an interesting story in contrast, RCT-31 (Task Force Faith) was effectively destroyed in that battle while the 1st Marine managed to walk out. Faith consisted of aprox 3600 soldiers, roughly 3,000 from the 7th Infantry as well as a 600 KATUSA. They faced somewhere between 15 and 20 thousand Chinese infantry over the course of the week. On the eve of the battle RCT-31 was positioned on the eastern edge of the resevoir, spread out over ten miles of shore. Expecting to move out the following morning they were lightly dug in, unlike the Marines who had concluded the Chinese were preparing to cross the Yalu and who had consequently prepared far more formiddible defensives. RCT was compromised from the start, spread apart and understrength the Chinese were able to overwhelm them in series of human wave attacks.

Knewsom,

My info comes from 21 years of being a US Marine. I have worked with the British Royal Marines before back in the 90's

They are more of a pure "commando" unit. Much smaller than our Marine Corps. Our Force Recon or MARSOC Marines are similar.

They are a pretty hard group of bad asses. We have a few "exchange" programs with them and our guys never have anything bad to say about them and their training.

Just curious, what years did you serve?

I haven't been in the military - I was honestly curious, and that's why I asked.

My comments weren't meant to disparage the Royal Marines in any way mind you; but as Gy points out it is not an apt comparison. I've worked side by side with 40 & 42 Commando as well as the SBS and they are fantastic units and warriors.

That being said, the US Marine Corps is a totally different beast and while we lose out b/c we can't be as particular we are also an order of magnitude larger and, quite frankly, still hold our own quite well anywhere we've been sent.
