For the last 5 months I have had an off and on problem with engine missing, kicking, and backfiring out intake on my 1997 D1. 98% of the time it runs perfect but once in a wile above happens. When the problem starts it is usually the first start of the day, and it feels like something is wet causing this problem. Problem is that it starts Missing and backfiring out intake for about 10-20 min all the time trying to get it to smooth out by giving it some gas, if you try to drive you will not be able to go over 25mph. I let it come up to temp and give it some gas to heat up all the time sputtering and missing, then turn it off and on and the next thing you know it will start and run perfect. This has happened after I have left the house as well but only 2 times, it was within 2 miles of house each time. I do have a check engine light and code is P1178. I have checked fuel pressure and it is good. Plugs and wires are about 1 year old. I checked ECU to see if plugs were wet wile in the middle of problem and they were dry. I have cleaned mass air flow meter 2 times and still have this problem. What makes me think it is the mass air flow meter is the fact that it backfires out the intake and I should not have a timing issue because I don?t have a distributor and code P1178 is related to mass air.

1178 means that both banks are running too lean, meaning they are getting more air then the computer thinks it should.

GEMS engines like yours have 2 breather hoses on top of the valve covers going into the intake. These hoses usually last about 30,000 miles before they designatrate and cause a vacuum leak.

Another cause is the intake gasket. They will also cause a vacuum leak.

As far as your MAF sensor, I think your barking up the wrong tree. I'd bet you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Thanks chris, one of the hoses were split on the back side when I moved it I could see it was shot. Now my question is could this have caused all the starting problems I have had? I drove truck all day and it has not acted up, but the first time I started it on the way to work today all it did was sputtered and backfire out intake. It is like somthing is wet and as engine warms up whatever it is dries out and truck will run fine.

It could cause it. The engine was getting too much air.... Cold starts acualllu need even MORE fuel then a warm engine. I wouldn't be surpised if after you replace those hoses your running problems go away.
