My disco has been making a funny smell for the past two days and it smells like melted crayons. Nothing is leaking and all the fluids are perfect. I checked to see if any plastic bags got on the exhaust but didnt see anything (its happened to my cobra and it smelled horrible till it fully burned off). It is running great except for it running rich. Anyone have any ideas?

No glowing cats and no recent greasings. Everything seems to be running as normal. Thanks for the replies so far.

Has anyone done the gas tank recall yet? If so how long did they have your Disco for? I need to get mine done soon.

are your exhaust shields all in place, sounds like your carpet might be heating up. touch behind the center console and see if the floor is hot to touch after driving.

I am in the same boat as bigred, it is not inside the truck only outside, I have narrowed it down to the rear of the truck. Oh and the smell goes away very quickly (after about 5 or 6 seconds).

Had my fuel tank replaced about 2 weeks ago...they didn't have one in stock, but they got it overnight for me and I had my truck back within 36 hours. HOWEVER, these results are not typical--the LR dealership here is scared of me because I'm a baaaaaaad man--seriously, though, they tried to fuck me a few years ago and ended up having to replace my engine for F-R-E-E...lost some LR employees, etc. So yeah, they have treated me like royalty ever since.

Must have missed a reference to fuel tank recall. What model years are we talking about, just 2002? Mine is a year 2000 (produced 1999), 4.0 L.
Dirtygas
2000 Disco II, NAS, added CLD, (currently in/op)
2000 Ford F-150 4.6l

I have four kids and haul them around in the disco, they wont fit very well in my 03' Cobra and my wife has a solstice so we are going to be hating life till they can fix it.

Try to work with your dealer, explain your situation. My dealer made sure they had a tank with my name on it before I showed up. Then I went over there and waited an hour or two while they did the replacement.

I did have to go back once more to get a new fuel pump because the fuel sender on the old one got messed up in the process. Same thing on that trip - they called when it came in and I waited a fairly short time while they replaced it.

Note this requires that they actually plan a time slot for you, I doubt all dealers are willing to do this. If they will not, try to get them to give you a loaner while they keep your truck.
