ok. did you ever light a fire with that machete?

For some reason, I thought that said machete, not matches. Still, the point remains. I was starting fires with natural means somewhere around that age. I grew up doing these things. I spent little time in the house, and most of my days and many nights were spent in the backwoods by myself or with a friend or two.

At 7, I was certainly in posession of means to start a fire. And I never even came close to burning anything down. Recently, a local fire department actually asked me to burn somethign for them, as I have a reputation for safety and experience in the matter now, and even then did I have this reputation.

The problem here isn't a kid with matches. The problem is an idiot kid with matches, and the idiot parents that produced him. Of course, accidents do happen. We don't have much of a story to go on.

And, actually, I have indeed lit a fire with a machete and a flint... So there.:D

Cheers,

Kennith

I hate to bring up the obvious, but the problem is not the kid who lit a match, or even the parental evils that got him to do such a tragic thing as light a match. There are many people that have matches that will light a fire for much more sinister reasons than even a seven year old can think of.

if you want to protect wooden bridges from destruction there are great fire retardants that are available. Why was this bridge not protected?

We can borrow money from China to fire proof all the wooden bridges in our country.

When I was a kid, about 9 maybe, my friend and I found a dirty magazine. We were having a blast checking it out until we got to a page that showed a guy naked. We didn't know that it was normal to show everybody's everything, so we thought the mag was "gay" and we decided to burn it in a pasture close to where we found it. We screwed up and started the whole pasture on fire. Never got caught.

Anyway, point is that this kid is no different. Kids do stupid shit all the time. All kids are idiots. I'm suprized he wasn't inside eating candy playing video games or something. I thought kids didn't play outside anymore.

Apparently it was, by controlled burns. Until people moved in to the area who "knew better".

As for kids with matches..mine have been around fire since they could walk. I've let them light the grill and campfires and the woodstove since they've had the motor skills to not burn themselves every time. They're 11 and 13 now and have never shown any interest in going out and setting things on fire.
Same with other dangerous things, they had their first rifles when the youngest was 6 or 7, love to go shooting, but have never shown any desire to "play" with guns or pick up a gun they "find" (I've tested this to make sure).

I think as much at fault are the "city folk" who move to the country then complain about people doing things that actually protect nature more, like controlled burns. Or complain about the manure odor and farm eqipment on the country roads.
Here in Orange a few years back, some city folks had moved in and tried to get the railroads to stop blowing the whistle when coming through town. I kinda like to hear that a big f'n train is coming, just in case the cross guard doesn't come down. at least the town stood up and shot them down.

Too bad about the bridge though, my kids learned from me last year when my brush fire blew back on me. Now they know what fire can do.
