Has anyone modified an existing(D1) rear bumper to be a little more off road worthy?(by that I mean deleted the end caps other than knocking them off on a rock and replacing/welding? with something slider/tube like protection ? Been looking at replacing my existing OE unit with something that gives a little more ground clearance and or protection to rear panels but most require modify rear frame ?before you can mount(or am I doing work to make work?) Did a search but didn't come up with any thing close.

I disagree

Lane removed the outside plastic wraped the two braces in and welded them to the stock base piece and then dragged it all over Moab for a couple years.

If you cant afford a bling rear bumper you can for sure make the stock one much stronger with just a little work.

is it the best solution...no, but everybody cant afford the best solution and the guys that can make due and be happy with what they can do deserve kudos for sure.

Lane's make due attitude has always made me admire him as a person.

Not too long ago, I was looking at stock Disco bumpers and thinking one could weld a 1.25" tube behind their lower lips. They could be made pretty strong that way, and yet retain the stock look.

I was thinking that as well(tubing wrapping around from existing bumper).I have RockStar front bump so the tube theme would work.(or I could quit beating this horse and just purchase matching (RockStar)rear bump .As I recall Brad said there was a little bit to installing his unit(some rear frame modification as well).Oh well, thought someone would have been here before I thought of it.Thanks.
