Muffler delete

I'm finding a lot of threads in the search about replacing the factory muffler with Magnaflows, Flowmasters, etc., and a lot of threads about deleting the resonator, but what about deleting the factory muffler? Mine has started to rattle quite a bit, most likely loose baffles inside. The local muffler shop said they'd cut it out and slap a straight pipe in there for $40. The resonator was gone when I bought the truck, but even so it's honestly pretty quiet right now. Louder would be fine with me, but not "can't stand behind the truck without covering your ears" loud. Anyone have any input on this? 4.0 motor, factory cats, exhaust exits straight out below the rear bumper.

Aren't there two mufflers on a DII exhaust? Are you talking about the center one or the one at the end of the pipe(back left corner) or both? I drove a 98 DI with a straight pipe in the center muffler but the rear one still there. Wasn't noticeable while driving but a slightly louder sound at the back.

I'm probably calling something the wrong thing, I assume the resonator is what I'm calling the center muffler? So you'd have just the 2 cats?

The resonator is the one at the rear, the muffler is the one in the center. At least, that's what I've always understood them to be called. My resonator (the rear one) is gone already, so this would just be straight pipe after the Y from the cats

So no center muffler? That'd be too loud for my liking.

I just did this on my '96. Stock everything but replaced the center muffler with a straight pipe. There's some drone about 45-50mph, but it's not terrible. I'm used to it now.

If you're having a shop do it, I'd recommend having them install a slight offset to mimmick that of the stock muffler. It's not absolutely necessary but without it the rear portion of your exhaust will be slightly cocked.

Magnaflow and no resonator here. Sounds really good around 40-50MPH then it quiets down above that. I like to hear my engines or I'd just ride around in a Prius.

Good call, I'll make sure that they do. I'm eventually going to have that rear portion of the pipe turned to exit out the side, as it currently just goes straight back, but that's going to wait until I slap a Greg Davis on the back in lieu of the factory plastic bumper. It's still intact for the moment, but it'll get ripped off one of these days.

I finally did that to mine. I like it a lot. This is the muffler back.

With the magnaflow and no resonator I wouldn't call it a loud exhaust I'd call it a normal exhaust. LR's were made to be luxury vehicles so they made them extremely quiet which is fine, but there is nothing wrong with hearing a V8 rumble at idle or acceleration. I get a nice sound at idle, and a good sound on acceleration. The TC whine is the loudest thing on my D1 and yes it's full haha.

I run two mufflers. A giant magnaflow under and a small one where the factory resonator went. Still has a little rumble. I and everyone else on the trail likes quiet. Especially when you wheel With Toyotas which are super quiet.

What magnaflow primary muffler are you guys running? I think I'll replace my stock muffler this year. The resonator has already been cut out.
