Muffler Hunting... Power/Noise

So I'm just over thinking some first world problems here.

I have a Flowmaster 40 series on the 2004 D2 right now. It's just too loud for most things I do with the truck. Often I am at my friends ranch and while driving out to stands or to check traps, well, it's just too damn loud. Scaring game is busch league.

But man, oh, man am I the coolest sonofabitch ever whilst mall crawling and idling out of the Hooters parking lot (ultimate douche move).

I would like to get back to quiet exhaust. However, I don't want to give up any gained HP that I may (or may not) currently be enjoying.

What are your thoughts? I am considering going back to stock. Is that advisable?

Is there a happy medium? Little bark and a smooth quiet 1500-2500 RPM?

What are you using and are you happy with it?

Thanks gents. :patriot:

I'm running stock muffler with resonator delete. I thinks it the best all around sound. Just a very muted rumble at low rpm's and that's it. I doubt you gained very little, if any at all, hp with the flowmaster.

Check some of the scca forums and see what guys are running. I think it's scca or one of the sanctioned types that do have decibel requirements. There are mufflers designed for optimal flow at lower decibels but probably not as quiet as your looking for.

I just got the big 22x11 straight through magnaflow muffler. Will report back when I get it on. It worked on some race cars at making them really quiet.

Dynomax vt has a internal butterfly valve. Under light gas no drone under full throttle it opens to be a straight through muffler. Just make sure you get the one for 4 liters or more displacement. :victory:

Magnaflow 12286 here. Really, really like it. Slight burble at idle, yet never loud or obnoxious. I can't confirm any power gains because I've never actually found any power with this engine to begin with

First off, thanks for all your input. I considered everything said.

I believe that I should go back to stock -resonator and give that a go. There is a stock muffler at hand that's not going to cost me anything and I can evaluate the situation from there.

It's doubtful that I am realizing any 10HP gains from this muffler. It's even more doubtful that I will care/notice.

I do like the attitude of the exhaust tone being a little aggressive. If this thing is just too quiet I'm only ever $160.00 away from the Magnaflow 12286 that I would go with on all of your suggestions.

I looked at the Hushpower but couldn't find any videos of it on a small V8... Sounded great on back-halved big block draggers though.

Anyways. I hope this thread will serve someone else that is thinking about changing up their exhaust.

Merry Christmas all!

I have the stock resonator and removes the rear muffler on my D2. Sound is good, and barely louder than stock, plus makes some more room under the back end. Now I dont worry about hitting it off road. I made the pipe exit in the same location but higher (made a slight relef in bumper).
