That is serious talent. It's pretty incredible that one guy is playing bass, melody, and drums at the same time on one guitar. What's more impressive to me is that he's playing the melody with his right hand and it's the left hand that's handling the bass. This is opposite from usual guitar technique and I can only imagine how much practice it took to re-train his muscles.

Little Wing cover:

Ok, the guy can play, I'll give him that. My problem with that song is that his between all of his improvisation of the song, the melody is lost.

Sometimes less is more. There is a reason why nobody knows who this guy is. Sure, guitar fans will love him, but as a musician, you've got to keep the melody there between all of those notes.

Here's my favorite Little Wing Cover:

I really like Jimi Hendrix, but Stevie has him beat on this one. My brother and I have a running argument as to whose version is better. Stevie hands down. Normally it's Stevie's voice along with his guitar that makes his songs so good, but in his cover of Little Wing, his guitar is just bad ass. When you listen to Stevie's version, the song sounds right; it has soul. Jimi's sounds too quick and abrupt instead of flowing.

I haven't read the whole thread, so forgive me if someone has already posted up some vids of Stanley Jordan.

This is what you get when you take an Ivy League brain and mix in a little soul:

He uses his left hand to play chords / bass and the right to play lead. This guy is over the top.

I couldn't agree more. I never get tired of listening to SRV's version...

I disagree with you on this one. Jimi's style is quick and abrupt but that's why I love him. He's a product of the rock and roll guitarists of the fifties and early sixties--ironically, the ones pictured in that SRV video. Jimi took the sharp and quick twang sound of the early rock and roll masters and developed it into his own with his soaring melodies. SRV's version dates to the early 80s and was developed on the foundation laid by the great guitarists of the 70's (Think Jimmy Page's work on "Since I've Been Loving You"). The signature SRV style had been in development for years and he didn't pioneer the sound. I would argue that Jimi Hendrix's style is his own and based less on the foundations of musicians past.

Chris, I could care less about the history of how a musician got there. Really. I don't care if he is an innovator or not. The only thing I care about is how the song sounds.

Stevie's version sounds better. That's not to say that I don't like Jimi. I do. He had some fantastic songs.

Here is one of my favorites:

That's a hard nut Mike,

Steve Ray's version is better but Jimmi wrote the song.

Kind of like Jimmi's all along the watch tower is superior to Dylan's, except there would be no Hendrix version without Dylan.

For the record I actually love that grungy version Clapton does too

That's my point. The history of the song doesn't really matter, to me at least. I know that Jimi wrote it, but when I go to iTunes to listen to Little Wing, I click on SRV's version.

I did a little checking on Jimi and it appears that his final resting place is less than 10 miles from my house. I think I'll go pay my respects.

For another compare and contrast of Jimi and SRV, let's take another of Jimi's songs: Voodoo Chile. This song was written by Jimi, but was heavily influenced by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, BB King and John Coltrane. Again, I really don't care who played a role in Jimi's writing of the song. The song just flat out kicks ass.

As compared to how he played the guitar in Little Wing, Jimi's style in Voodoo Chile is much more soulful and flowing. He makes the guitar sing. This is how I think of Jimi Hendrix playing the guitar. Stevie Ray Vaughn's version is fine, but it's not up to the same level of Jimi.
