So what was the final verdict on the "right" plugs. I have those damn Bosch plugs too. I too am trying to cure codes/ rough idle. What a F'in mess man. Hahaha.

That makes me mad. Atlantic british told me that this is what the rover used when I did not need anything fancy just stock. I hope I do not start having these problems. Thanks for all the info though good to know if it does begin to act up.

Ok, I want to add to this. I put in the bosch 4+ about 10k ago.(I have a 96 disco 5-speed) They seemed fine to me, gas milage ok too. No misses. Well over the last 2k, I have had a few misfires at highway speeds, and my gas milage is going down. I have not pulled these plugs, but I am wondering if that is my problem? The best gas milage I can get now is 17 on the highway. I was getting close to 19 before about 10k ago. GRRRRR! I wish I knew about these type of problems when I changed my plugs!!! I was not on this board though :( . I had heard that people didn't like them, but no explanation as to why!

Side note..... I once put split-fires in my honda,.......whoa!!!!! that realllllllllly sucked. That thing felt like a bucking bronco!!!!! Took them out in about 2 days!!!! HAHA!

Brianpack01/Landy96,

I think the best thing you could do at this point is get stock plugs, either the original one mentioned in the manual or the RN12YC as previous people mentioned. I Don't know if the RC12MC4 I bought is right or not so I won't recommend those just yet. That's just what the parts store said came up in their book. I proved to myself already that expensive plugs don't mean functional plugs. The +4's just can't handle preventing any fouling, particularly if you decide to run Seafoam or engine/fuel cleaners.

Look at it this way, it only cost me $12 to swap plugs. Very little money. Sure, "good" plugs could have lasted longer, but they cost me almost 6 times as much and they didn't last 100 miles. I could have bought almost 6 sets of cheap plugs. Even if I changed plugs every 20, 000 miles, that's 100,000 miles I could have gotten for the value.

I'd be interested in knowing how your Bosch plugs looked, e.g. if they were wet/black.

all bosch plugs???

Chris, are you talking all the bosch plugs are shit or just the +4s. i putt a set of the single tip platinum bosch plugs in my 95 f150 which is definitly not high performance and approaching pretty worn out and they improved my milage and free way on ramp performance noticeably and my old plugs had about 30-40k miles on them and were not trashed. i dont know how they will hold up over time just curious if your bad experience have only been with the +4. sorry the truck in question isnt british but i guess its kinda a step cousin now. as a side note i also changed plug wires to magnecor and didnt notice a change at all. it was just more for peace of minds since they were originals.

My Experiance with aftermarket Bosch platinum plugs has not been good.

If its working for you, Great! Even a broken clock is right twice a day. ;)

Not there are manufactures that use Bosch plugs as OE, Both cooper and Platnuim. But not THAT platnium plug. No one uses the plugs they sell at Autozone as Factory installed.

Plenty of the Euro cars use Bosch Planium tipped plugs, but a completely different animal.

Why did you pick them? Why not Motorcraft?? Motorcraft makes a platnium for that truck.....

Interesting... I?ve had + 4?s on my D1 for about 5000 miles now. No issues, can?t tell any difference in performance. Gas mileage is about the same. I don?t think I?d spend the extra bucks for them again. I figured I'd try them once just to see.

to be honest because of the people on this and other rover forums that had nothing but rave reviews of them. that and the price wasnt all that outrageous. of all the different brands most of their platinum plugs are within 40-5- cents of each other. thats not really that much of a difference. so i went with them. i got the platinum single tip at the zone. dont remember exact price but it was less than 20$ for the set of 8.

yeah i know exactly what you mean. just because i see a problem on a given airplane or engine a hundred times there are lots of people that never see or have the same problem. but i have been in that exact situation u described earlier with a customer where you knew the problem before even looking at the parts and they didnt believe you. been there done that. i guess you shouldnt just blindly believe what ever u see on the internet. ;)

I didnt like the Bosch plugs either, bought the same experiences as the rest of you. However, I tried some of the NGK replacements since I have a friend that works for them. They are the standard plugs- and havent had a bit of problems over the last 10K miles....well, not outa the engine anyway. Anyone else run NGK's?

I run NGK Platinums. No issues at all. I tried Bosch Platinums +4 a few years ago, they worked fine for a while, but then I started having misfires at highway speed, too. Never happened after I put in the NGK's. The Bosch plugs are crap.

Landy96??? Let me get this straight..you were getting how much mpg??? Damn boy, what you feeding that thing???

So, let me get this straight...I'm NOT supposed to run +4's? The damn retired service underwriter for LR told me to run them. Had them on for the last 20K miles, no problems.

That's the thing about forums- we all gripe about one thing or another- how thing A works and thing B does not. We always must try to put a round peg in a square hole, or is it vice versa?

Going back to the plugs, don't ya know that a Rover has a soul? I think because they are the only vehicles out there that could possibly be considered "man's best friend"- they are self-concious and demand what they like. Face it, our machines can be finicky!

If you want make you Rover, or any vehicle engine trouble free- install a Briggs & Stratton in it.
Might be a little underpowered, but it'd never wear out! ;)

NGK is what I use in all cars from stock to blown 383 small block. I never had problem in any engine. Started using them in the 80's in GTR XU1 Torana I had, all other plugs would fail after a couple of 7000rpm blasts but stock NGKs lasted for 1000s of Km.
