I've been driving around for about 6 months with what I thought was a shot catalytic converter. Yesterday, it was very loud--like marbles rolling around in a can. Well, after driving home yesterday the rattling sound has completely disappeared. I was gonna take it into the shop this weekend, but since i dont have to pass emissions and now the noise is gone, I am considering just leaving the old ones on. Bad idea??

was the noise coming from your cats? or was it coming from the large can just after the Y pipe? I thought it was my cats going south but it turned out to be the large can rattleing inside, replaced that for 80.00, I don't think any harm will come if you wait some more time -Andy

Not sure if your Cat has the same honeycomb insides that mine did but, you may want to pull it apart and make sure that there are no chunks of it in your pipe or muffler and resonator. I say this as pieces may get lodged in the muffler or pipes and cause a blockage, loss of power, excess heat, and maybe even some loud whistling.. I'd pull it all apart and make sure that the bits of it are out..

My resonator on mine has been replaced 3 times... each time it sounded like a bad cat. I learned two things from it-
Don't go to Meineke for exhaust.
Thank god that if you do, they have lifetime warranty- you'll need it.

If it was your cat rattleing and it has quit, chance are good that the material from the cat has broken up and is now lodged in your muffler, which is not good in that you will now have way too much back pressure for the engine and you can fry your exhaust valves.
Go have a shop check it.

Cat replaced

I ended up taking the truck to a shop and had a generic cat welded in. Less than 2 bills. Pieces of the cat were in the resonator. The guy just took the resonator off and put a straight pipe in. Seems to have more power now. BTW, first place i took it to said you cant weld them in, and they proceeded to quote me 2,800 bucks for a new exhaust system.
