My fuel pump is LOUD!

At least I think it is my fuel pump. It is really loud when I come to a stop light, calms down when I take off. Is this normal for a 96 D1? Is this a sign of imminent failure of the pump? Should I replace it now, before it fails?

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like it is coming from near the passenger side rear wheel. It is louder when I am stopped at a light.

I am not positive that it is the fuel pump, but what else makes sense?

the only thing in the back of a disco that sounds like a fuel pump is the fuel pump, unless it has rear ac. it makes the noise all the time? just louder when stopping but still after stopped?

ratboy, to be clear always audible, changes pitch when off the gas pedal. I have no rear air.
is this an indication that the fuel pump is on its last legs then?

maybe.the only way to know is to change the fuel pump assembly. it might not fix the problem. when there is a noise and you are not sure what it is, you have to go after what you might think is causing the problem and see if the sound changes. since there is nothing else in the back of a D1 that could be making such a noise, its a good place to start. altho, if the fuel pump is that loud i would be suprized that you didnt have a running problem. have you changed the fuel filter?

I have a filter here ready to go, just had bigger fish to fry until now. Truck runs pretty well now. I have a P1138 code, but I figure that to be on O2 sensor. Maybe I should start with the filter before replacing the pump?

It absolutely makes sense - my 96 D1 does exactly the same thing. To a tee.
The pump vibrations are transferred to the rear quarter panel by a small plastic hose touching the panel. If you reach under the rear quater, you'll see what I am talking about. Move it away, and the noise will diminish.
I do it once in a while - but the hose eventually makes its way back. Need to either reroute or clamp it differently.

Unless you're curious, don't bother with fuel pressure etc. I've mistakenly swapped out a perfectly good fuel pump while chasing this sound.

Definitely good info. I've got enough to tackle on this thing. If I don't have to do this now, I am happy no to screw with.

Thanks a ton!!!!!!!
