Check out my new (to me) toy...its the only pic I have of it yet.
98' Boxster-it's a different kind of fun!

...now I have moved into splitting my lurking time between here and the Boxster Boards. Its funny though, I did find myself surprised to find that there are others out there displaying the same level of loyalty to another vehicle that has the same potential to swallow your out of warranty vehicle owning cash!:D

...with that said I wanted to also give thanks to all of you (moderators and members alike) who have provided me and other lurkers like me with invalueable information over the last several years about my former 99' D1 and my current 04' disco.

Thanks

I'm not a big fan of the Boxsters...they remind me too much of the 914's. Yours does look pretty nice with those wheels though. Any plans on modifying it?

That is unusual to hear...at least from my experience.

I've always loved it (the styling that is)...even after I found out it was not a particularly fast car having only slightly move than 200Hp stock. But at only 2800lbs, with its mid engine its tough to beat when considering both the handling and breaking abilities for the dollars!
Just a ton of fun.

not sure what happened to my last post but here goes again...

the brand new 19" rims and tires were a nice feature to consider when comparing a few other vehicles to this one given their history (miles, car fax record, etc)

But no mods planned.
Maybe an upgraded exhaust when the curent one reaches its end of life or an extra set of rims/tires if I get around to entering an autocross event.

In my opinion, given my research on this model, the engine cost too much to repair if the addition of a supercharger or intake presents a problem. It is what it is, a handling and breaking fun car. It's extremely capable right out of the Box pardon the pun.

Driving it reminds me of the feeling I had when I took my first Discovery (a 99D1) off the pavement for the first time.

Very nice looking car!

I'd definitely take one...but I'm a Merc fan to the end. Unless of course a Ferrari or Aston would ever appear at my door!

I've got a Boxster S. It's most definitely my first love. My RR is nice to have, but if I had to chose between the two it would be the Boxster hands down. Sorry Land Rover manics, but that's the way it is...

A normal Boxster is a really nice car. If you learn to drive it correctly you can be faster than most "S" owners, and even some 911 owners. I'm not sure which "Boxster Board" you are hanging out in, but Rennlist is by far the most Discoweb-like of all the boards. Pelican Parts is another good one.

Also, you should, if you have not already, join your local PCA. They'll take care of teaching you how to drive it fast without you having to spend $$$ on professional training.

If you read up on your Porsche history, you will likely come to the same realization that I did. The Boxster (along with the 944 and 914) are what Ferdinand Porsche intended Porsche cars to be about. Lightweight, low hp, excellent handling, American-big-hp-killers. While the 911 has contracted the need-more-and-more-hp disease the Boxster is left to be the "true" Porsche Ferdinand always dreamed of.

That little Elise is a freaking go-cart on roids.... The GT/Sport limited version that is coming here soon with the extra horses ( 200+ ) is going to be a fast little car. There is also a track version coming that is supercharged but, it won't be street legal.

Either way the lack of weight makes up for the lack of HP.. Even now at 190hp it will do 0-60 in 3 sec. With the added HP of the sport I'm sure that number will be even better in the smile factor.. If I was in the market for a little 2 seater sport run-about I'd already have my name on the wait list for the new Elise that's coming.

The Boxster just never did it for me.. I'd rather spend the extra cash and get a 911..

Congratulations!

I also have an Artic Silver '98 and it's a great car.

Besides all of the obvious performance points it is supremely reliable and the build quality is phenomenal.

Is your car a Stutgart or a Valmet car?

The boxster is an incredibly forgiving car so pretty much anyone can drive it, but it's also quite simply as fast as you are good. The better you drive the more speed you can eek out of it. It's no special task for boxsters to front other cars 100 hp and still hang on road ralleys.

I second the rennlist recommendation. The guy for all boxster DIY tech questions is "ToolPants".

Go get yourself some Griot's best-of-show wax and a clay bar and get to work.

They've been around awhile and I've heard that the Elises are not exactly flying off the lots. Maybe a little too hard-core for the $40k-50k crowd, maybe with toyo engines they will last a while and be a future bargain on the used front. I'd love a Boxster too. Ya'll are making me really jealous.
