Ok I see that their are a number of you that have dogs...so I would like to pose a question. Each winter my dog starts scratching and loosing fur in certain spots that he chews. HE IS COMPLETELY MISERABLE!!!! I imagine it is allergies.

I need a remedy....please...any advice?!?!?!!

I would assume it is a hot spot, possibly due to boredom (I bet he doesn't get to go out as much in the winter). He might just need some more activity. I think there are also remedies for this at any good pet supply company.

The Lou!
My border collie does the same thing, but all year round. I use an oatmeal spray by Kenic that I got at a local feed store for $7.00. It's doesn't completely take away the chewing (but then again he IS a neurotic border collie) but at least it provides some relief. The best part is the smell, and it's coat conditioning properties. Since he scratches and chews so much, he tends to get really stinky in between baths because of all the dead skin cells he's creating, and this spray extends the time he needs a bath. This is really good because too much bathing will only worsen the problem by drying out their skin.

Good luck with the little critter!

That is perfect...I remember using that one year that this happened. I think if I dig around I may be able to find it. I had totally forgotten about that. Thank you Jen.

I totally agree with you on this also. I know that he has not had as much running around and attention over the past two weeks so I bet that it is also mental (as in lonely or feeling ignored). I have just been so crazy busy away from home. Time to play though! :D

Also, try benadryl. 1 pill for every 20 lbs, twice a day. It should help. In addition, our dogs get missing link plus which I highly recomend. Check out this website http://b-naturals.com/default.php for their EPA salmon oil pills too. That site is awesome for dog supplies...we trust them 100%!!! If you have any questions at all, e-mail me...my girlfriend is a dog trainer so I can forward everything to her.

That is great! Thank you. I will try that. I have not changed his food so I don't think that is it. I started giving him wet food so he will get the oils from that and it worked quite well.

I did find the oatmeal spray and that helped a great deal.

Have you taken the pup to a vet for some advice? I would recommend that. You might be able to solve this with a change to the diet or medication.

Yes many times and I end up paying a butt load for allergy medicine that does nothing for him so I gave up on that. It usually goes away within time, I just need something to relieve him and maybe get rid of it. I was just wondering if all the other dog owners deal with this also.

Make sure that it is not a flea or a tick. I know that my female german shepherd's skin is extremely sensitive and one flea bite can have her scratching like crazy. Ask your vet about a steroid shot near to the area. Obviously a topical flea ointment will help as well.

Did your vet say anything else when you told them the meds did not work?
Did your vet do anything to test the dog?
Offer any thoughts on diet?
Second opinion from different vet?

What is the food your dog eats now? Might just want to give an XD or SD type food a try (presription food). Maybe try a diet of rice and ground turkey for a few days to see if it helps, vitamins help when on this diet.

for both of you...Alice and Jen-in-Tampa...when I lived in Tampa my pooch was a bald and crusty miserable bastard! The solution is a shampoo called Chlorhexiderm made by DVM Pharmaceuticals. Its an antibiotic shampoo that works miracles. This stuff is amazing! I tried all kinds of stinky charcoal and oatmeal crap but the Chlorhexiderm is unbeatable. DVM also makes a milder shampoo called Relief that works good as an alternative week shampoo. I know you'll get lots of suggestions from this board, but believe me...I tried at least a dozen other medicated shampoos before I found this stuff, and their aint no substitute!!

The best part is that the DVM stuff smells good, so you'll be back on the floor sleeping with your pooch in no time!
