I am hoping someone can help me figure out what happened to my disco. Let me preface this by letting you know that there were no issues prior to this - my engine has been running great.

I was going slowly up a pretty rough, steep rocky road and eventually stopped and engage the center diff to 4X4 low for the next part of the road. When I went forward - the car stalled. So I restarted, and then it wouldn't idle. I was able to keep the engine running by continually pumping the gas pedal - but as soon as I stopped pumping or tried to hold the rpms it died. I was able to basically back down the road with a dead engine enough to get turned around - and luckily was only a few miles from home - so got it home pumping the gas pedal all the way, braking with my left foot and running stop signs! It sputtered and back fired all the way.

So my first thought was fuel filter (hail mary) which I was meaning to change anyway so I did that today - but it made no difference. Oddly - there is no engine light - no codes at all to check. There are so many systems etc I am at a loss as to where to even start. Fuel pump? Relays? ECU?

It still starts every time - but will not run without the pumping. Seems like a fuel issue for sure. Thoughts?

SOLVED: I did get a Hail Mary! It was the rubber tube that goes from the air box to the plenum. It slipped off. Put it back on and retightened the retaining band and all good. Sure cheaper than a new fuel pump! Wish I had seen that when it happened - but it was barely noticeable. Good to know if you ever have similar symptoms ...

I second that comment! Check your motor mounts, there's no way my motor tilts enough to disconnect hoses

When I lived in LA, without fail, one of my coworkers would break a motor mount on their D2s. The worst time ripped the intake hose off. That wasn’t a big deal. The bigger problem was the transfer case shifter must have moved because when he got out of the truck it started rolling down a large hill!

Finally getting back on here - wow - will definitely check the motor mount - could be the culprit. Prepping a new engine this winter - so they will be replaced soon anyway. Thanks for the feedback!

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a a crack in the air filter. I guess it didn't like the extra air flow...

FWIW, there is also an Oring between the top of the air box and the tube that holds the MAF where the clips hold the two parts together. That is easy to lose if you undo those clips. The engine will run like crap without it.
