i was driving down the road today when all of a sudden my rear end started making a real wierd noise. it sounds like i'm dragging a bunch of cans behind the car. there was no oil coming from the rear end and i couldn't notice anything out of the ordinary. its a 95 dI. i left it at a gas station and have to move it by tomorrow and need to know if it would be okay to drive. any help would be greatly appreciated.

"drive about 40 miles a mountain",
do you mean 40 miles through and over mountain roads? if its u-joints and they let go completely, the drive shaft can come lose and smack the road and truck and scare the holy living shiat out of you, causing damage to drive shaft and truck, and what ever else it comes in contact with as it flails around under your truck at many rpms a minute, thats bad. if its the wheel bearing and they seize up, or come apart you can destroy a hub or even an axle, resulting in costly damage, both cases are dangerous, and loss of control of the truck "might" happen, compounded with the windy road doesnt sound fun.
My vote is for wheel bearings, and tow it. to someone you can trust. thats unless you can change them yourself.

i'm leaning more towards the u-joints because the sound isn't comimg from one side like it would if it were the wheel bearings. also could i just remove the rear driveshaft and drive home with the front wheels only?

Pull the axles, make sure the splines are not hammered or broken.

Pull the entire 3rd member and replace. You can get a brand new one from GBR or Atlantic british for somewhere in 350-400. Would be a good time to think about ditching the rotoflex.

Yeah, if it's the differential, take Bri's advice and just replace the entire third member. It's not that big of a job, and really if you're just going to replace the entire thing and not mess around in there too much, it's maybe a few hours tops to do. Keep us posted!
