Hey guys,

Want some honest views. I had a 96 D1 that I loved and beat the hell out of on the trail. I sold it a few years ago cause it just became stupid to maintain even though I had always kept it up to date and spared no expense. I live in VT and I am considering buying a D2 04. My question is this, are Discos dependable. I dont really like my dealer, the service manager is kind of a prick although there are a few other places I can get it fixed. So, whats the word? I don't want to have to worry about my truck, I want it to run smooth and I wont be taking it off road this time since VT provides the same eperience just on the main roads and the weather =D

I know more about Land Rovers then the Sales people here which isnt a surprise but I dont want it to be fussy. So can I count on the last D2 model for 2004 to be less fical and run more like a TOyota with better looks. Gas here is outragous and I dont want big gas bills AND big service bills. The thing has to be dependable!@!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ooooooooooooooK!

so, ALyssa can I buy the extended warrt. if I buy the vehicle privately? Or only from a dealer do I get the option to buy the warrnty?

The SHORT replys above seem to suggest Discos are still fussy???? Believe me, I am receptive to a car having problems but I dont want to be like Norm on Cheers at the local LR dealer, instead of a beer they hand me a bill every week

Yes, you can still get an extended warranty if you get the vehicle privately, you may just have to have a vehicle inspection first.

I'm guessing the short replies also have to do with the fact you are on a LR board, so we're all a little slanted toward LR (and hear this question a lot-- do a search on the topic, and you'll find lots more responses).

The '04s have a lot of benefits, mainly factory CDL, the 4.6, & better brakes. Most of the niggles have been worked out with them, but it's still never going to be a toyota. It'll always be much cooler than a toyota, too, though.

It'll always be a money pit.

Everyone here loves Rovers, but we all know what they cost to maintain.

Sure, mine is reliable in that it starts every morning. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't spend +/- $1,000 a year to keep it on the trail.

And if gas costs are an issue, a new 4.6 shouldn't even be an option. If it's a daily driver, you might be looking at $50 a week.

yeah your right

I too love Rovers that is why I am here. Gas is not a problem neither is money but I used to spend 500-700$ a month not a year on my D1 and I don't really want to do that again. I kept that thing tip top so maybe it was an incompetant dealer. But thanks for the replys and I will go buy the 2004. Good to know about the warrnty Alyysa I appreciate your help and I know you haave worked at a dealer or still do. I ahve been reading your posts for 3 + years

$50 a week!!! Ha! i live in Northern california... and have a "standard commute" aprox 23 miles each way X $2.57 gas = $50 2.8 times a WEEK  in my 4.6

but i gotta admit... for some crazy reason... i love EVERY painful/costly minute of that commute...

whaaa!! Whens oil going to go back down to $34 a barrel?!?!?!?

I just got back form my first weekend trip with my 04' Disco. I was actually quite impressed with the mileage I got. 500 miles, averaging 17.5mpg which I thought was pretty darn decent! Avg. speed around 70-75mph, every now and then hitting 90-95 just for the heck of it! Was great except the dog puked in the back seat!

Nice!

Delta HAHAHAHA thats hilarious! I too have 2 dogs and know what that is like. I drive from VT to NC every other month or so to race. So hearing your 500miles is simply amazing ( and hard to believe ) but it certainly gives me hope. Glad you like your rig!

Not to sound like a pain, but can you blame the dealer for costing alot of money. At and average $80 per hour for repairs, I would think that you would at least learn to do the basics on your Disco. You would have saved yourself a small fortune.
