Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on this forum can give advice on a replacement battery for an '03 RR HSE. I have tried other forums without much success so far. Dealer will sell me an OEM replacement, at a hefty price. The Optima website says there is no Optima battery for this vehicle. Local battery shop first recommended an Odyssey PC1700 but then got back to me and said that would be too heavy and recommended something they said was made by Johnson Controls, a 49/93/7.

This mean anything to anyone here? Any advice?

CSK list this as a direct replacement:
Exide Battery: Autolite?; 84 Month; L:14 7/8" W:6 7/8" H:7 9/16"
Autolite Battery: Group 49, 850 CCA; 1000 CA; 120 Minutes Reserve

Optima might not have a direct part number for it, but something with as much or greater power that fits will work. I hear a Optima Red SC34 works.

Johnson control makes both Optima and Interstate batteries.

Too heavy? Too heavy for what? Too heavy for the car? I don't think so. Too heavy for their pansy-asses to lift into the battery box? More likely. The odyssey battery is a killer unit, if it fits, then you should go for it. The thing has great handles on it, drop that sucker in there! If you need to, raise the hood completely vertical by unhooking the struts and then engage the safety clips on the hinges once the hood is completely vertical. That will help with access.

Thanks. I will make some more enquiries especially about whether different ones fit after I get my Range back from the dealer, who is replacing the front diff, when the part is eventually available. For the moment it is on back order....

So, I finally gave up with putting my '03 Range on the trickle charger overnight and got a new battery. Thought I would pass on some information to other members of the forum:

According to the dealer the battery they would put in is the Interstate H8.

http://www.interstatebatteries.com/estore/search.asp?details=1&mscssid=NLSU0V4VR5JB8KUHTV9SNGS24DUAFB23&N=4294574607+2147384879+4293509522&part_number=MTP%2DH8&part_desc=Interstate+%2D+85+Months+%2D+720+CCA&Nu=Part+Number&nsa=1&js=1
This has 720 cold cranking amps. Interestingly, Interstate's own website says that their product for the '03 Range is the MP 93, which has 850 CCA.

http://www.interstatebatteries.com/estore/search.asp?details=1&mscssid=NLSU0V4VR5JB8KUHTV9SNGS24DUAFB23&N=21+4294574255+4294574254+2147384741&part_number=MTP%2D93&part_desc=Mega%2DTron+Plus+%2D+85+Months+%2D+850+CCA&Nu=Part+Number&Ns=product+Type%7C0%7C%7CRank%7C1&js=1

However, the dealer couldn't fit me in until early May, even for just a new battery, so I went to the local garage who used to service my Disco. They recommended putting in an AC Delco Heavy Duty 31-901CT, which has 950 CCA.

This is the ACDelco battery recommended by their website for the P38 Range - their website doesn't show a battery for the L322.

http://www.acdelco.com/parts/battery/heavy-duty-battery.jsp

This model of battery fits in the space provided, and is a stronger and heavier duty battery than that recommended by the dealer. However, the battery hold-down clips have to be slightly bent to hold it in place, as the battery does not have a little jutting out edge on the bottom. Also the negative post is in a different position so you need a slightly longer negative cable.

With the extra cost of the cable and labour for alteration of the clips I guess the cost worked out about the same as at the dealer, but I have got a stronger battery.

Cheers,
