new cd deck

Just did the job myself on 98 D1, added the pioneer cdx-fm687 ( 6 player) . took me about 3 hours, BestBuy said $100+ plus parts ( 30 - 50) to install.
Problems/suggestions:
Get the right tool to remove the radio! Its a torx style snapon pt awcgt8, ( $20) also called a european radio removal tool, also take apart any laptop computer ever made!!!
Get teh wiring diagram for the truck
Route the fm mod unit up to the existing radio head, go around the drivers side and you will get there.
You will need a set of european car antenna adapters ( also called VW radio cables) $30
Use the existing wiring under the passenger seat for the primary power, you must also get a 'on when ignition on' feed and this is under the drivers side seat.
Th existing ( if you have the old player) mountings do not fit the new players, you have some hacking to do. Make sure you mount the player to alogn with teh cutout under the seat, if thats where you are installing it.

Good luck, if you decide to install a pioneer player, email me via the members link and i'll try to help.

I would suggest that you rewire around the factory amps if you purchase a unit that has a good amp and some sound shaping capabilities, most do, then a good approach, rewire. This does not mean the entire truck, just from headunit to speakers, most call it amp-bypass. The amp is located but under front passenger kickpanel. You are simply re-routing the wiring by cutting-out the factory amp.
I was having all kinds of issues until I got rid of the factory amps. Oh, I also replaced the factory subs and amp with a powered tube.
When you cut wires from amp, use 9-volt battery to locate which speaker, ohm meter to id the pos/neg for each speaker and of course your factory wiring schematic to make the connection to the head unit.
Good luck.
