New Computer Question

My wife and I want / need a new computer for home. Ideally we would just get the tower and reuse our monitor and stuff to try and save a couple of bucks. All we really need it to do is store some photos, some light word processing and Internet duties.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (ie. brand / model) to look for to handle our needs? As with everything else in life, cost is always a concern.

Thanks,
Michael

I like both compaq and dell, the only problem is they load them with 'free' software that clutters it up.

Check Dell.com, they have some good deals. An Intel Dual Core(tm) Dimension or similar. Get a DVD burner, as it's only a little more than a CDR. XP Pro (see if you can get a Vista upgrade coupon free), and M$ Office Standard. 512mb RAM or better

A Mac can be good; if cost isn't a concern. Since you said it was, then I'd look elsewhere, FWIW....

At work, they alternate between ordering Dells and Gateways. Both are mostly okay, but both have some issues, too. Anything can have....

If you don't mind spending a little money, I'd look at Alienware. If you really want to keep the cost down, look at something like the Dimension desktops at Dell....

Ignore Netjaws. Just because he has a hard on for Mac's doesn't make them right for you. If you are trying to reuse your monitor and as much software as possible, that's not your answer. Check out HP, I've always had good luck with them. Also Dell, but I've had bad luck with Gateway. Also, you may want to figure out what is cutting edge right now, and back it down ( chip speed, memory ) two or three notches. That is about the point where you can get a good deal, for a computer that won't be obsolete next week.

I agree: trying to save money doesn't equal get a mac.
There are simple and fairly inexpensive programs for storing and organizing photos. One I use is called breezebrowser but there are others like it.

See if there is a used computer store around you that takes machines from businesses that went out of business. For what you describe, a 2 year old computer would be fine. if it's just the tower, and you can reuse the Microsoft Word and such, you should be able to spend $300 or less. If a warranty is important, you'll pay a bit more.

Definitely check out Dell. You can't beat their prices. And they often have deals where they throw in a free 17" or 19" LCD monitor.

You're looking at the right time. Xmas specials will be here soon.

i dont know if you have a costco near u or a membership but here is an idea. i have never bought a refurbsihed computer and so i would like to hear others opinions on the subject. i suppose you get what u pay for but it may be worth the risk for basic computing needs. i am in the exact same boat. a friend of mine recent got this one http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11123626&topnav=BC&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4019014&Mo=15&No=6&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=4773&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&hierPath=84*56671*4773* i think he got it set up last nite so i will ask him how he likes it. i realize its not the highest quality but i dont need to edit videos or beat the russians at chess.

Dell, Gateway, eMachines... these are all shit. Because of the lousy archiecture and complete lack of thought behind the design of Windows, your disk will be fragmented beyond imagination in three months. And the monitor they give you for free will be blury, for no reason, in no time at all.

I am surprised that people who can appreciate the ingenuity of a Land Rover can't appreciate the Quality of design that goes into Apple products.

The cost argument is too 90's. Macs are more affordable now than ever. Elicit-2000 man, based on your requirements and what I perceive to be your level of knowledge, a Mac may be perfect for you. At the very least, check out your local Apple store - there is even a section in CompUSA that showcases their products. Honestly.

How's the reading comprehension class working for you?

He didn't ask what the best computer was ( the pc vs mac debate). I am sure that most of us can appreciate the design of most of Apples stuff, including the Mac, but that doesn't mean that it is automatically the answer to everyone's computer question. I appreciate the design of the Rover as well, but it absolutely doesn't suit everyones needs.

The cost arguement is too 90s? Dude, he said up front that he doesn't want to pay a lot.
Get on the internet, word processing, look at pictures, not cost a lot. You don't need all the fancy stuff in a mac.
And as for price. the Macmini STARTS at $600. sheesh. Read what he said. "Reuse our monitor and stuff and try to try and save a couple of bucks."

I like your first line up there Swa j-Ten. Let me try: Apple is all shit. There, just as authoratatvie. You really turn someone on to your product by calling the others shit while backing it up with lame excuses. I've used my desktop at work for 3.5 years and never defragmented the disc and it worked just fine for "photos, word processing and internet stuff". For what he's planning on using it for, even a fragmented drive won't matter much.

Mac elegant design....like not putting a fan in the macbook pro. Ask the guy at work about his macbookpro that is too hot to put on his lap and the keyboard is too damn hot to type on halfway through the day!! Same guy....power adapter fails. He goes into the store thinking it will be the best way to get back and working. Nope. They say they'll send him one in *two weeks* and that he can buy another one and just return it in the mean time. Greaaaat. So, how much is this little power adapter? "$96, please"!!! WHAT??!? This is on top of paying $350 for AppleCare. Great, he spent $350 on a warranty that got him a $96 power adapter in two weeks (yes, it did show up in 12 days, but who's counting).

Now over to the same problem at work with one of our Dells. We paid less for the next day warranty. I call up Dell and state it's bad after giving them the serial number. They check the address and by 10am the next morning it's on my desk.

Flash further back to the iMac I'm using now (yes, I own both and am typing on a Mac now). There's another one of their 150MB updates coming out, just like Microsoft. I install it. Mind you, this is to correct the fact that my iMac's sleep light is WAY the hell too bright (the good part here is they got complaints probably from college kids who have their iMac in the dorm room and can't sleep with the thing fading in and out so bright, and then they actually acted on it, so kudos to them for that). The install says it needs to reboot, I say "ok". It reboots, doesn't make it into the OS and turns all the fans on high, for 4 hours!!! Elegant.

Anyway all computers are crap. there is no Holy Grail. Apple, Dell, Gateway.....they are all just companies who really don't care about you, just your money. Unless you work there.....maybe worshiping any given manufacturer isn't a good idea.

Apples (ha ha!) to apples.
Bottom of the barrel Apple and a bottom of the barrel Dell desktop. No Monitor.
Apple: $600 and no warranty
Dell: $350 with one year at home warranty.
Both will accomplish what ElCid wants

i can make you a computer for $500 and run mac os on it you want, but don't expect me to give you any service.

look, if you are computer literate than get what you think is best.. if your not, you need to really look at the services manufactures can offer. and with that said, dell is one of the best in the business.
