New design for power steering fluid reservoir?

My power steering hoses were leaking so I decided to replace all 3 hoses with original LR hoses along with a new ZF power steering reservoir.

The reservoir I received was missing the built-in filter, but the supplier states that this is a new design. Does this seem correct?

Their reply: Our warehouse rep has replied that the filter is attached inside per that photo you sent - it looks like it's a new design for that part.

Part Number: QFX000010
Part fits: 1996 Land-Rover Discovery SE Sport Utility 4.0L V8
Manufacturer: ZF

Pics of old and new reservoir attached for reference.

On my 1997 Disco the reservoir includes the filter as in your first (left) picture. On my 2001 Rover, the reservoir does not include the filter as in the picture on the right.

part numbers are: ANR1998 & ANR6222

If I wanted the filter I would look for a used unit.

Walt, thanks for the input.

robertf, I've never thought about that, but it does seem as though it just filters as you fill it.

The old reservoir has no leaks and the cap is good, so I think I'll just send the new one back and stick with what I have.

I used engine cleaner after the hose installation and the steering box is still clean after a week. I'm hoping this will extend the life of the bushings in the new panhard rod that I recently installed.

How hard was that job? I have a 2000 Disco 2 with 140K that isn't leaking yet but on the original hoses. Wondering if the job is similar on the D2.

Thanks.

Not hard at all. It took me about 1-1.5 hours. Would've been a quicker install, but I used the new reservoir as stated above and didn't notice the new filter design until I removed the cap and was about to fill it with ATF. I just reinstalled the old reservoir with the new hoses. I'm not sure if anything is different on a D2, but it's probably similar.

I bought original LR hoses (3 hose set $245) from British Parts of Utah. The fittings on these hoses were perfect.

This same job took me hours years ago because I bought aftermarket Britpart hoses with fittings that weren't machined correctly. The threads didn't want to grab and after finally getting them installed I had small leaks which progressed into large leaks.

You guys may be blown away by the fact that a 2024 INEOS Grenadier uses the same exact power steering reservoir.
And it weeps fluid exactly the same way.

I've noticed it used on many other vehicles over the years as well. They should be cheap because the economy of scale on those things must be excellent.

Yup, I'm pretty sure it's the same reservoir that was used on my old BMW's (540 and 545). I've been dealing with this same reservoir design for many years.

Kinda makes since that the Ineos has the same reservoir since the engine is supplied by BMW.
