Picked up this sweet new water purifier before my Colorado mountaineering trip. No more jacking around with clumsy water filters. All you have to do is press a button and stir your water with this little guy. Purifies 1L of water in less than 90 seconds using an ultraviolet lamp. It does something like 30 gallons on one set of batteries.

Nice Chris. I've seen that but haven't read much about it. Does it kill the taste of the water too?

No, the water looks and tastes just as nasty as it did before purification. I just filter it through my t-shirt if it's too funky but if the taste was bad to begin with, this won't improve it.

Not sure if it would be the best thing for canyoneering. :D

thats not a filter, it just kills organisms in the water. i'll stick with my bulky one at least the water isn't still muddy when i'm done.

Just keep it warm. I've used a Miox (different technology), but still use a filter. Miox is more appropriate for larger quantities of water.

From Steripen

Our testing has shown that a single set of non-rechargeable
(disposable) CR123’s will treat approximately 50 liters of water.
Testing on rechargeable CR123’s (750mAh) indicates that
approximately 35 liters may be treated between battery charges.

Cold ambient temperatures may reduce the number of doses
available from batteries. To maximize available battery power
keep your batteries in a warm place (i.e. your pocket) when in
cold weather conditions.

Yeah, either a Miox or one of the big Katydyn pump filters are good choices. The small handhelds take far too much work per litre unless you're hiking with it and need to keep weight down.

Miox works okay but that swimming pool taste drives me nuts! Plus, you have to wait at least 30 minutes before drinking.

There is another manufacturer that makes the same light stick and it comes with a screw top that fits on a wide-mouth nalgene. You fill it with water, stick the light in for 40 sec. Then you remove it and insert a particle filter into the same housing. You can dispense right from the nalgene...all for $110. I am saving to get one. The rep I was talking to said that they were military designed and work as good our better than a pump.

Good choice for extended backcountry trips. I hear the batteries last awhile too.

I have a rather old and lame filter and it takes merely 1 min/liter and compared to the trek, its trivial effort. Most filters are about the same. Even if I had a steripen, I'd still use a filter. Used filter exclusively Fri-Sun, works fine for me. The steripen is a neat gadget, but I still don't like bugs or debris in my drinking water.

Chris, if you keep telling people where you work we are going to hit you up for discounts and group buys!! ;)

Since we are talking about water sterilization....what about the Life Straw? I know it's not really for camping, etc. but has anyone actually used it?

MIOX is also more appropriate for cloudy or flocculent water. Organisms can hide in the shadows and evade the SteriPen, so it's best to pre-filter the water when UV purifying.

Another reason for me to just keep my good old filter. maybe both if I were trekking in a 3rd world or something, but clear mountain water and a filter is all I need.

Chris-
I know it has been awhile, but can you provide any updates or reviews on this product?

The price is coming down and I am ready to buy one now. Since a governmental collapse is inevitable, I want to be prepared.

i have a few life straws and they are great. they were designed for poverty stricken people in life and death water situations but ive seen them tested and used in africa and they work great. i have a few thrown into my survival kit. they are cheap too.

Not sure where to get the lifestraws as dont think avail to buy in usa yet.
More info here

Same product is also called Filtastraw too. At this stage there are some issues getting large volumes of the the FiltaStraws into the USA as a result of FDA requirements. They do however supply small quantity orders for sample/promotional use to the USA.

Full licensing of this product is underway and this year they will get the approvals required. The company is selling them @ 5GBP for 1 - 24 units in the UK. Here is their website.

admin@filtastraw.org.uk is their e-mail.

I'm still alive and as far as I know, still parasite free, so, yeah, the pen works great!
