New Fuel pump, no start

Replaced the fuel pump yesterday, it ran great. Went to work this morning, it ran great. I was coming home a little while ago and it just died, in the middle of one of the busier streets in town.

Turns over, acts like its not getting gas. If you leave it sit for about 5 minutes, then try to start it, it will start but only for a second then dies.

I don't have any more info, as it is sitting in a parking lot across town and will have to wait until I get the trailer over there tonight. That is, assuming I don't decide to torch it.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Usual suspects, inertia switch, crankshaft sensor, plug off the pump, pump relay.

Did you try and run the old pump after removal?

Try checking the fuses as well, F10 is the main fuel pump feed.

Once running they tend to be OK, so sounds like something has become displaced.

My son popped his inertia switch over some potholes in town last week, so it's easily done.

Well I did what seemed like the easiest thing. I pulled the pump out, walked into Autozone, walked out with another new pump and it starts right up. Don't know if the first one was a lemon or what, but we shall see I suppose.

That's easier than ruling out the plug??? Good luck with the new pump. Hopefully it doesn't leave you on the side of the road because it was too hard to jiggle and check the plug. :banghead:

whats happened to you happened twice to me with aftermarket pumps
one was connector wouldnt seat properly and other was fail on install.
so i went genuine and no problems

i severly believe in genuine for these trucks.
used genuine or new genuine has always been better than aftermarket for me.

I had intermittent issues with the fuel pump on my 96 D1 a while back. Ended up being the last length of harness that goes over the frame rail behind the left rear wheel. The factory had installed the harness pinched between the body and the frame. It eventually began shorting out. Easy fix once diagnosed with a buzz light.

every few months mine will up and shut off. i just get out, walk back to rear wheel well, giggle the harness, wave the sorry wave to traffic behind me, start it back up and continue on my way. I should really find the issue and fix it before it bites me on a hill climb.
