those brackets don't look that bad, sound like they are strong enough if you can hang on them. Personally I would go with the coleman brackets if you are going to cruise around with your lift all the time, but if you are just going to put it up there when you know you are going to go on a trail, they sound fine. One thing you might consider, since they are plastic, what about the stress on them when you do offroad? If one of those suckers breaks, that would be a shattered window.
My two cents,
Lee

To JohnC,

Would like to see pictures of when you fit the Waffles boards. I have been using two sets of the EE Hi-Lift clamps with some home made brackets attached.

How about mounting the HiLift behind the front seats? I did this...$10 at the hardware store. I used the existing rearward facing seat bolt instead of drilling holes into the floor. Might be an option for you non-roofrack folks!

What rack do you have, these don't seem to fit the Safety Devices rack? They're too small to attach to the smallest brace.

They have a removable section, did you modify them in some way?

Xanthro, are you asking me??

Mine is a NWP rack, it has been sandblasted and coated with Herculiner. I bought the 1" dia. clamp and the rack tube dia. is a little larger than 1" so it holds nice a secure.

They don't fit the Safety Devices rack as stock. :(

From your picture I couldn't tell you had a different rack so I ordered 8. LOL.

That was the breakpoint in shipping. I figured I'd use them for CB Ant mounts and such, but I'll have to modify them somehow.

They are also much larger than I expected.

I got them to fit, but there's way more stress on the hinge than I would be comfortable with and mount the Hi-Lift jack.

The should be able to easily hold a shovels and the like, which is what I wanted them for. I'll report back on their off-road longevity.

On a D2, the 48" hi-lift with the base removed fits nicely behind the rear seats. Just fold the rear seat down a little, slide the jack in-between where the seat and the seat latch is located. fold the seat back up, and it will essentially lock the jack in place. Strap it down if you are worried about it flopping around.

Xanthro, how would you use those to mount a shovel?

The quick fists mount via a bolt that goes through the rubber. The bolt head is recessed so only rubber contacts whatever it is that you are mounting.

Put two coleman racing brackets on the brush guard, add two of the small quick fists and you've got a pretty good shovel mount (although very expensive).

Since shovels are pretty light, if you have roofrack, you might consider just buying some Thule or Yakima rack shovel mounts and store it on your roofrack.

The other problem with the Coleman's is that they come in strange colors. The size I needed only came in pink. Fortunately, I had a friend who had the pink stripped and re-anodized black.
