I know this is going to get me a mealy of opinions and ideas I know. But I would like to see you guys and gal?s theories and experiences on what you fell is the best way to go.
This morning I woke to the first frost here in the northern states of the USA. And that means winter is coming. And for me, it means temperatures getting as low as ?10 to -20 degrees F. Bloody cold sometimes.
Earlier in the year (spring) I replaced my bad water pump and later some hoses I topped off the coolant system (being lazy) but found that the mix wasn?t 50/50 and after testing found that I was covered to +5 degrees F. No problem nice hot summer I?ll flush before winter and fill 50/50. So now the time has come.
Question. What antifreeze should I use / get the best performance from / wetter?s etc etc.
At the moment there is the green stuff in it put there by the previous owner and top off buy me, and that?s all I know it green.
I have used the orange stuff in my Range Rover in the past and the green, orange being the GM no phosphate Aluminum safe, Blah blah blah. I have always added some Bars leak to all coolant flushes I have done just for safe measure.
But I?ve heard it make no different which, I?ve heard only orange, I?ve heard orange is good but it causes problems used green, I?ve heard any old cheap stuff will do.
So now I sit here scratching my head.
What do you use and why????????????

Quit adding the Bars leak, that crap will kill your coolant system especially when you just keep adding it. It will build up in the engine in places you don't want to think about and cause a restricton of coolant flow.

It matters. For 95 D1, the owners manual says ethelene glycol based antifreeze with non-phosphor based corrosion inhibitors. You can get this at most autoparts stores, I believe. I go t it at NAPA. You need something good for alum. engine. The stuff I got was yellow.

I use green Prestone in the white jug, and it works fine.

Last year, after the death of one of our pets from ethylene-glycol poisoning, we asked around and switched to low-tox Prestone. I spoke with Mike at East Coast Rovers and he said they'd used it for years with no problems whatsoever. We live in Maryland, so our temperatures don't go as low as yours, but Mike's shop is in Maine. As I recall the low-tox was rated very nearly the same in performance as the ethylene-glycol. You can look it up online. We've had perfect performance in our Disco, two Chevy trucks, and our tractor.

Many deaths of humans, mostly children, and thousands of animal deaths occur each year from anti-freeze poisoning. PLEASE properly dispose of this stuff whenever you flush out. Our two animals were not poisoned by us. At the time we had both a serial poisoner of animals on our street and a neighbor who carelessly flushed this shit right down his driveway and in front of everyone else's property. We can't be certain which was to blame, but it was an awful thing to deal with. Apparently antifeeze is quite tasty, so animals and kids are drawn to it. Deal with this product as the poison it is.

I use 50/50 water and Prestone. And a bottle of Redline Water Wetter. I add a bottle of water wetter at the begining of every summer. From what I have read the stuff works to keep the temp down 10-15 degrees. I did two desert trips back to back a few years ago and did not use it for the first trip but did for the second. I noticed the needle did not climb as high on the second trip when outside temp were actualy higher than the first. Dont use it to mask a symptom, take care of the problem first.
