I need a new starter for my DII. I remember reading about a gear reduction high torque one but can't remember the name of it or who makes it.

If anyone could help me remember I would appreciate it, or recommend a different one.

Thanks

MG makes a great product, but I don't think they ever went to making one for the DII. They were always asking for a donor vehicle in order to start making them available.
I had an MG in a few of my DIs a while back. I was a dealer for them wayyy back in the day.

I installed one of their starters in my 95 D1 15 years ago and it is as strong as ever - one crank hot starts.

Don't buy their Alternators they are just rebuilt GM units and they are NOT 200 amp like Mean Green claims they are. I had one go bad it was the rectifier and while it was still under warranty "supposedly" the owner refused to replace it.

I had one of the British Starters on my old DII. Worked great and had a nice build quality.

I'm familiar with mean green, but didn't know they made starters, and other people have good things to say so I am leaning toward them.

I will call both and see what they have to say. The MG one is quite a bit more expensive. Don't know what makes theirs that much more.

Yeah that's kinda what I was getting at. The British Starters look nice and have a lifetime warranty....

I've got a BS on my D1. Drive shaft smashed the first one, they honored the warranty, and adjusted new one to mounter higher up.

Does the BS have a different mounting profile than a stock one? Meaning does it protrude farther or encroach on the driveshaft area more than a stock one?
Did your driveshaft fail taking out the starter, or was it just through normal offroad cycling of the suspension?

The damage wasn't catastrophic, but it was no longer sealed and cracked bad. To the starter's credit, it still worked.

Here you can see how much lower the BS starter extends. Fortunately it can be rotated to several positions for better clearance. I also positioned the drive shaft flange where it impacted the starter. It had no effect on the flange.

Basically if you do a move like my avatar and the front end comes down hard enough to hit the bump stops, the drive shaft flange could smash the starter in stock position.

Yup.
So if I were to get a BS starter should I ask them to modify it in some way, or is rotating it sufficient?

Nothing custom needed. Undo two bolts on the mount plate, rotate one or two holes, tighten bolts (use loctite), done. Plate and holes can be seen in pic.
