New Twist on Dealer Fraud Options Needed

There is a Land Rover dealer in my area that is possibly commiting fraud against the customer (me) and Land Rover NA. Here is the story.

My new wife wanted an SUV for the kids that she believes to be right around the corner. I told her that the only thing allowed in the drive would be a 03 Disco II.

We proceded to the local dealership and purchased a certified 03 Disco. I took the truck to a buddies shop nearby and put it on the lift. No visible issues, with the exception of expected seepage from all the right places. We buy the truck, wife is happy and I am rewarded.

Tuesday a tech from the dealership called and wanted to borrow my trailer. When he arrived his words where "please tell me that you did not buy that truck from, instert un-nammed dealer here). I said as a matter of fact I did, what is wrong with it? He proceeded to tell me how he and another tech refused to certify the truck until several high cost issues where repaired. Later a few band aids where applied and the car was certifed by another tech who is known for applying bandaids and doing things half assed.

The issues that where pointed out proved to be correct, such as a drip of transmission fluid per minute from where the G box meets the bellhousing. After a pissed off sleepless night I arrived at the dealer at 8am the next morning.

I relayed what I knew without going into too much detail of what I actually knew to be the case.

The dealer agreed to fix some of the issues without a certified deducible straight away. They could not locate the certifed check list at the time.

Two hours later they called and offered to buy the truck back and wipe the slate clean.

Another hour passes and the GM calles and wants me back there at 4 to reinspect the truck on the lift, now magiclly clean at the bell housing. And wow they had located the certified checklist and the RO for the needed repairs.

RO Issues: The mechanic listed on the RO is no longer employed and is not the tech who completed the work......

Tech who signed off on the check list never touched the vehicle.

The dealer has agreed to repair an issues on the truck without a deducible, but I have lost all faith in the dealer and the certification program......

Wife loves the truck and wants it, as long as it is fixed.

Anyone else heard of an issue such as this, fraudulent certification??????????

Keep the truck and keep the wife happy, or turn it back in and go to another dealer.

I have verified the failed certification from three techs. The GM, Service Manager, salesperson, and Service Advisor, spent an hour each telling me that there is no way that the dealer did something unethical.

If they are willing to buy the truck back, why even consider keeping it if you have doubts about the truck or the dealer? These trucks are flooding the market, buy another one, and get it from a private party that can give you maintenance records.

I, for one, can't stand this sort of bull shit.

If it was me, I would have them buy the truck back and then pursue the issue with LRNA or some other higher entity. This dealer has no business selling vehicles at all.

Do you have a local consumer advocate you can contact?

Turn it back in and raise some hell. Don't you dare keep a truck from them after that... ;)

Give it back to the dealer and find one privately owned and you can get a much better deal. Also, you should get an extended warranty.

I had a similar experience in 1999 with a 95 D1 certified from Land Rover dealer. Truck was checked and certified, you know the whole list of things that should be done, it's posted right in the show room.. The next day, dead battery, flat bedded back to dealer, shifter graphics lights out, rear end fluid not chaged (black), front end fluid not changed.transfer case fluid not changed Mileage was 59 or so thousand. According to Land Rover all certified vehicles should be brought up to next sheduled service... transmission fluid and filter not changed, front swivel seal leaking , rear sunroof closed intermittantly. could not shift into low range four wheel drive at all (fozen rusted linkage) I can't even remember what else now. All they did was wash, vacuum, spray shiney stuff on tires and call it certified.

Long story short, the dealer made good on all items listed on certified check list BUT I effectively inspected ,found all problems myself, after purchase no less. Then THEY performed all the work, 3 days worth.

By the way, when I got the truck back, my sunglasses were broken IN THE CONSOLE. Great service right.

Be very careful when buying ANY certified used car and check each item on the list yourself as soon as possible. Don't take anything for granted.

The whole 'certified' BS from all dealers is nothing more than sales fluff. I bought a certified Toyota with 6K miles on it and they went on and on about the certification process. The next morning the rear wiper fell off because it didn't have a nut on the arm under the plastic cover. I bought two certified used Rovers and BOTH of them required follow up visits because of lights not working, parts missing, etc. Neither of them had been actually checked. In all three cases, the dealer said something like "well, there's so few miles, we didn't need to check anything."
Hell, Rover sold a "previously rolled" as certified used...

man should have got the 04 it has CDL!! trade that thing back in.
Yep. If you're having trouble and the dealer wants to buy it back, GET RID OF IT!!

The '04 is a better truck anyway if you're going to be doing any off-roading. If you're not, I guess the CDL doesn't really matter to you.
