Hi,

My wife and I recently bought a 1999 Discovery II to use as her second car. I'm a DIY kinda guy. I was looking at oil filters at the roverparts site and see a "long" and "short" version. Which should I buy? Thanks.

Here is a pic of the new to us rover at Oregon Inlet in the Outer Banks, NC. Fun to drive on the beach!

you could go to expedition exchange and look up the K & N filter and there you go it talks about them.

Use the large K&N, I believe it is a # 3001. It is probably 1/3 larger and every little bit helps.

I don't think anyone has addressed the original question, and I'd certainly like to know as well...what's better the long filter or the short one? Does the longer filter filter the oil better? Thanks

Maybe if you read what I said about going to the EE site, but no. What is with people not even reading the responces to the original question? This and the D1 remote. Come on people, this is sad.

"The HP-3001 is identical in all dimensions to the HP-2004 filter recommended by K&N's application chart except with respect to height. The HP-3001 is more than 1.5" taller than the HP-2004 and offers greater filtration capability due to the larger filter medium. Thread size and gasket diameter are identical to that of the HP-2004. We offer this the HP-3001 for those customers who want to maximize the filtration of their oil for engine longevity."

Who cares which filter as long as it fits. The best thing for it is to change it every 3-5k. nothing worse than using $5 a quart oil and a $20 filter an then going 10k miles on it. Don't be fooled use decent quality oil and filters and change it. Many oil companies make claims about there filters and or oil that you don't need to change it as often. It's BS. I would never go morte than 5 k and prefer 3K. I know this from countless tear downs on Audi, BMW and Porsche Engines when I was a tech for them.

Yummm....

Good thing I need a snack, as it's time to eat my words, at least some of them.
On another thread the issue of an anti-drainback valve in a filter came up. I said it really doesn't matter, as it's really only needed on a horizontally mounted filter, and the L/R filter is at an angle.
Well, that's only partly true. If you park with the front significantly higher than the rear, the filter will be close to horizontal and you will get some drainback if your filter doesn't have the valve.
