Babies change everything, but sometimes not as much as you think. I sold my DI shortly after I had my son, wish I didn't.

That is one damn fine DII. I suggest you hold off on the sliders and buy some running boards. It will make it easy for the wife to get in and out until she is back to herself after the pregnancy.

Perhaps that compromise will work.

Sliders with a side step would fix that trouble of getting in and out. I drove my DII all the way through my pregnancy and never had issue getting in and out - but then I love it and overlook things.

Looks like you're going to take a bath selling that Disco. Do the math on money lost vs. gained. Sell one of the other vehicles to make room for the CR-V.

Very nice truck. But, I don't understand the rear bumper. Why have it swing-away the same way as the door? What does it accomplish?

Man.. You guys are like Rover therapists. I have done the math. I have a daily 36 mile commute.

Rover = 12mpg (if I'm lucky) - Takes premium
CR-V = 20mpg - Takes whatever fuel is cheapest

Just my commute alone is expensive with the Rover. The whole idea of selling it is to save money.

The swing-arm removes the large heavy spare tire from the door, adds a ladder and a hi-lift mount.

Keep it. You're going to eat your shorts on the sale. Even though that's a nice rig, it's worth nowhere near what you're hoping it is. Sell the one with the best resale value - the CRV.

Trading 12mpg for 20mpg won't make up for the loss you'll suffer with the sale of the Disco. If mileage is your biggest concern, you need to ditch the CRV, too and get something with better than 30mpg.

Ahhh. How much weight do you gain by having the Swing-Arm apparatus? Don't get me wrong, I like the bumper.

So that's a weekly 180 mile commute w/o weekend driving. I'll adjust the mpg numbers to the CR-V's advantage -

Disco @ 12 mpg = 15 gallons ($3.60/gal prem) = $54.00/week
CR-V @ 22 mpg = 8.2 gal ($3.40/gal reg) = $27.88/week
That's $26.12 week difference in favor of the CR-V

Selling your disco means all the money you invested in upgrades is now a loss. Say a conservative estimate of $3K money out of pocket now gone forever. With the numbers listed above it would take you 115 weeks (2 years) to recoup the loss. That's not even taking into consideration sales tax and DMV tags on the newer CR-V.

Man, just tell your wife to get an extra job!!!!

Just kidding! You know what's best for you. And of course family comes first! Good luck!

He put on $15K in upgrades according to the original post (he's got to be counting labor charges, right?). I think you can revise your number of years to break even slightly upwards. He may only recoup $3K out of the $15K if he doesn't part out the extras - and that's if he finds the right buyer. That leaves him $12K in the hole. $12K will get you 3692.3 gallons of gas at $3.25/gallon and take you 44,307 miles, and last you almost three years driving 60 miles a day, five days a week. Take it from someone who added mods to a D2 then sold it for what it was worth without them - you don't want to do this unless you're ready to be bummed out for a very very long time.

I think you guys are forgetting depreciation and cost of money. Selling it now will get you ahead much quicker.

EDIT : Or you could always part out the mods and return the truck to stock to sell. I'll buy the rear bumper ;)

All vehicles depreciate - I'm only talking about the upgrades. This nicely mod'd '02 will probably sell for a couple $K over a similar truck in stock form. His $15K in mods will lost with the sale. Combine that with the horrible depreciation of the Disco and it's a financial bath. Seriously consider parting out the upgrades and sell the Disco as stock as possible - or keep/enjoy it as it and get rid of something else.

You guys kill me. While all the ideas are great, it just isn't practical to keep the Rover. Believe me, I want to keep it. I love driving it everyday. But when your goal is to increase cash monthly cash flow, selling the Rover is definitely the thing to do. Not only is gas expensive, so is the insurance. I don't purchase the lowest minimum insurance I can get. I have a house and a family to protect. Million dollar liability is the only way to go.

I know I will take a significant hit selling it. So why doesn't someone take me out of misery and buy it? Come on, you know you want it. :)

You talked me into it. The rear bumper is $17,500 and I'll throw in the truck.

Man, that is a sweet truck. I feel for you, I've been in that position before where you don't want to sell something but you have to. I wish my commute was as short as yours. I'm doing about 95 miles a day in a 97 P38 4.0 - about $100 wk in gas. I don't smoke, drink much or indulge in any other expensive habits so ... BTW, I've only ever run regular gas in any of my LR's - 95 Disco, 90 & 91 RRC and now the 4.0. A top LR certified tech who now runs the best independant shop in the Toronto area recommended regular over eight years ago and I've never looked back.
