The other night after I left work I stopped at a local grocery store and when I turned left the steering wheel hard I had a loud crunch and then no steering at all. When the tow truck driver came he looked at the steering column it all turned but there was a grinding noise comming from the steering gear box. The SRS light also came on after the steering went out. My vehicle is a 1998 Discovery 129K.
My question is that how should I approach this with Land Rover since that is something that should never happen on a vehicle that is properly maintained by it's owner. Has anyone heard of this occurring to other people that own Discoveries of this year or older?

back when i first got my truck 2000 d2 i had my steering lock up when i turned hard right. I just didnt make hard right turns. Eventually LR recalled it, or possibly warranty. something about the steering box. Something to look at.

Chris -- did it have any steering fluid? Just wondering because I just happened to check my fluid today and it was almost empty. I must have a small leak somewhere.

Chris,
At your mileage, LR will not be a player in the repair. These steering boxes do fail, like anyone elses and you just need to deal with it, BUMMER.

I know but it really sucks that this should not be an issue on any type of vehicle. Oh it did have fluid but also the box did leak like they all do. Thanks for all of the input.
