my 99 D2 started acting strangely. I recently(past month) replaced the XYZ switch, then the engine compartment fusebox due to the M+S flashers and no start. Ran fine for 2 weeks, yesterday and today he same thing popped up:
Truck starts fine in the am; drive to work no problem; park/get out/lock it; leave work and start commute home no problem; then a few miles from home(after a 35mi highway drive) the blinkers start working intermittently.

Knowing the previous electrical issues(don't park it where AAA can't tow it out!!) I pull up in front of the house, and put it in P. Trouble is:
Dash indicator still says "D"
Shift console red lights stay on "D"
Won't shift out of "P" back into "RND321"(truck is still running at this point). If I pop off the shift cover i can manually shift the trans into whatever gear I need, drive it no problem.
Shut off engine, truck in "P", dash says "D", console says "D", key will not come out.
No door chime when I open the door to get out.
Truck will not start, most likely because the truck thinks it's still in D.

Come into the house, spend 3hrs on discoweb researching wtf the problem is, inconclusive. go back outside, truck fires up no problem. Pull into driveway, turn it off, next morning get up, strt it no problem, rinse & repeat...please any ideas(I'm thinking bad ground??) would be great. Basically the truck thinks it's in D, then resets itself after 3 hours or so(not 10 or 15min or 60min...tried leaving it, then coming back out in 15min and 60min but no go).

there is a special tool for lining up the xyz switch, or alot of patience. did you use either? switch might be a little loose and moving.

I did not install the switch, the indy Rover specialist did. He is one of the better guys out there, ao would think he installed it properly. He did mention the shift cable is fairly corroded, maybe too much friction pulled it out of alignment? Additionally, the rear windows roll down but the fronts do not. Nor do the blinkers and hazards or central lock button work...so this has me thinking some sort of mystery electrical short??? Especially since the truck seems to reset itself after a period of time?

I had the same problem with my 99 . I never changed the switch . I found out if you keep starting the truck then shutting it off over and over again, until the key comes out . I would try to remove it every time I would shut the truck off. It could take 20 or more times! It works every time for me. I have had this happen to me or my wife a half dozen times, in three years. She has gotten out of it doing the same thing .134 k on it . There is no ryme or reason for it . I have been good over a year now.
