O2 Sensor Question. I NEED INPUT!

Got a question for all you guys. Will running throttle body cleaner, or gas treatment through an engine fail the O2 sensors. Here's the deal. A few weeks ago I pulled my intake apart and cleaned the throttle body with throttle body cleaner (the kind in the spray can), and now my "service engine soon" light is coming on. I have reset it 3 times, but it continues to come back on. I also ran a bottle of gas treatment through it. I'm thinking it has to be one of two things. A failed O2 sensor or a bad MAF sensor. What is your opinion on it. I would hate to take it to the dealer to run Testbook on it, since Land Rover of Louisville is now charging $100 and hour to run diagnostics. I would appreciate the input.

thanks,

I have a '00 and I periodically run the Chevron w/ Techron gas treatment in mine and have never had a problem. What type of treatment was it?

related to mileage more than anything else

I've run seafoam with no problems re: O2 sensors. The O2 sensors are going to fail sometime around 90K or later no matter what... I think there are three of them, all available on the web. You might as well replace them all yourself and forget the dealer! I did not do that, paid way too much and learned later how easy it was to find the parts and replace yourself!

No, I have actually just been reseting by disconnecting the battery cable for about a half hour. It resets it, but Once I drive it for about 15 minutes, the light comes back on. I'm thinking it is a MAF sensor on the intake because I had the intake apart the day the light came on, and I am sure that I probably knocked somthing loose. It only has 60k miles on it. I can only assume that since nobody has agreed that maybe the throttle body cleaner has faulted a O2 sensor, then they are probably good. Unless by coincidence one has decided to go out. The intake is the only thing that I had my hands on at the time.

FYI -
I just replaced the MAF on my Disco a couple weeks ago - it went out at almost exactly 60k. I tried removing it and cleaning with electronics cleaner a couple times, but it was a goner. I could clear the code, drive it for a few days, but the SES light invariably came back on. Since I replaced the MAF I haven't had any issues.

I bought an Equus Innova code reader at Schucks for $130 with a $30 mail in rebate. It's been a good investment so far. Without knowing the exact trouble codes, you can waste a lot of time and money replacing stuff that works. If you can swing it, I recommend picking one up.

Good idea! Another questions for you. I was told that when you change the MAF sensor, that you have to reprogram it using testbook. Does anyone know if that is true? Sound bogus to me.

Well, I don't know if I was "supposed to", but I sure didn't reprogram anything. I just swapped the two out. I can't think of anything that would need to be reprogrammed, but I haven't done much work on cars before.

Who did you hear that from? Maybe someone with more experience will chime in here, but it sounds bogus to me.

I got the Equus 3100, Schucks is part of the Checker, Schucks, Kragen Auto Parts stores (it's the "Schucks" brand here in the great NW).

Here is their web site - note the code reader is their front-page special ($114.99)
http://www.partsamerica.com/Default.aspx

If you have one of those stores in your area, you should check with them instead of buying it online. They might still have the $30 mail in rebate...I thought the rebate was good for the entire month of April.

Here in Colorado Checker auto parts has the same code reader fo sale. Autozone will also hook you up for free w/their code reader and tell you what's up.

Oh yeah, what he said. It looks like there are a ton of Autozone shops in Louisville, so you should be in luck. We don't have Autozone up here, so a code reader was the way to go for me.

Another argument I'll make for the code reader is convenience. If you're dealing with codes a lot, I can see it becomming a pain in the ass taking the Disco to Autozone every time to get the codes read, but that's your call.

Well, last night (on a long shot) I changed the air filter hoping that might have something to do with it, and then cleared the code. So far it hasn't come back on today and I have driven about 25 miles so far today. so maybe, just maybe, that took care of it. Its probably to good to be true.

Thanks for the help guys!
