I just heard that Obama now wants to OK off shore drilling. Anyone else heard this? Is this to threaten OPEC due to it's warning of higher gas prices this summer? I've heard that it will hit nearly $7/gal.

I think domestic oil is over rated.

I do not get the rush to start drilling into our reserves. Why not use up every one else?s oil first.

This is political posturing in an attempt at passing Cap and Trade. Federal debt is exploding and they need a new tax revenue source. Cap and Trade is about taxing energy which is used in every aspect of your life. It is a tax scheme, it is not about AGW.

Beyond the LSM headlines what is Obama really proposing?

Drill Drill Drill - From A Democrat?

Obama will propose allowing exploration off the coast of Virginia and, if a Congressional moratorium is lifted, in the Gulf of Mexico 125 miles (201 kilometers) off the coast of Florida, according to an administration official speaking on the condition of anonymity.

125 miles offshore is too far. Off most of Florida this is insanely-deep water. Yes, there is oil and gas there, but it's very expensive fuel to acquire, simply because of the technology required to reach the deposits.

Anyone care to bet on whether this is a game linked to "cap-and-fraud"?....

Why not California? Well because this is not a change in energy policy, it is a political ploy to significantly raise taxes.

As for the price of fuel massive Fed dollar printing are probably a bigger factor in the price we pay.

Finally someone in politics gets it. A nations wealth starts from the commodities it can produce, be it grains, minerals (includes oil), timber, or flesh (thinking live stock, fish not porno). If we are going to produce ourselves out of this mess we need raw materials to make it happen.

I'm not sure the current political elite 'get it'. Given the 125-mile limit it appears the cost of the commodity will be beyond what the market will bear and therefore this is essentially not a drill, drill, drill proposal.

What they do 'get' is that tax revenues are now 1/3rd expenditures and diverging. It most likely is a proposal to raise taxes to service expanding debt without expanding the economy.

$7 a gallon? Hahahah. I'll finally get a chance to jump the disco off a cliff since it will be worthless to anyone at that price.

Yeah, forgot about this ....

We already know to 'Watch what Obama does, Not what he Says'

Obama's New Drilling Plan: a Combination of Lies and Sleight of Hand

...The President started off his announcement with a lie. He said that the US only has about 2% of the world's oil reserves. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has light on the true picture of America's energy resources. ....The results show the U.S. endowment of recoverable oil to be 167 billion barrels of oil, not 21 billion - nearly eight times higher than the number pedaled by Democrats. Remarkably, 167 billion is the equivalent of replacing America's current imports from OPEC countries for more than 75 years.....

....And here is the "kicker." While the President will try to get the nation cheering about all of the new drilling (as if it will happen right away). Tomorrow, April 1, is the date the EPA is expected to announce all of its new regulations based on its declaration that CO2 is a pollutant. These new regulations will be a back door energy tax that will not only kill jobs, but tax every American who turns on a light drives a car or warm their house. They will drive up the cost of consumer goods and drive jobs over sees as the new regulations will increase the cost of manufacturing products in America.

This action will hurt the middle class more than any other group. The rich will be able to afford the higher costs for goods and energy. Under an Obama administration the Poor will probably receive subsidies to help them afford the inflated costs. It the middle-class who can neither afford nor receive aid that will be most burdened by Obama's intentional energy inflation.

A large tax increase on the middle class.

Obama Energy Announcement: More Imported Oil, Less Domestic Production, Fewer Jobs

I'm having a hard time detecting a coherent energy policy.

Agreed, if I thought he cared what the Right thinks, I would think he was just throwing this out there to appease the Right... but he could care less, he really doesn't seem to have a plan, and more than likely he's just buying someone off.

I should have just said producing our own commodities will generate more wealth than any government project ever could. The nation as a whole has forget that. One of the last symbols of where or wealth comes from was lost in 1960 when they took the wheat off the back of the penny and replaced it with a government monument falsely implying the government creates wealth.

This is just a dog and pony show from Obama. Things will change again long before a drop of oil is taken from the ground.

GOP Rep. Mike Pence adds:

“As usual the devil is in the details. Only in Washington, D.C., can you ban more areas to oil and gas exploration than you open up, delay the date of your new leases and claim you’re going to increase production.

“The President’s announcement today is a smokescreen. It will almost certainly delay any new offshore exploration until at least 2012 and include only a fraction of the offshore resources that the previous Administration included in its plan.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another feeble attempt to gain votes for the President’s national energy tax bill that is languishing in the Senate. At the end of the day this Administration’s energy plan is simple: increase the cost of energy on every family in America and trade American jobs oversees at a time when millions of Americans are looking for work.”

If they declare CO2 as a pollutant, will we have to start holding our breath?

That's just dumb. You will still be able to breathe. You will just have to pay a small tax on each breath. It won't affect the rich because they can afford to breathe. The poor will get a voucher to breathe for free. The middle class won't be able to pay for each breath and they won't qualify for free breath. In the end the middle class will all die. The rich will then control the poor.
