President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.

I know that this is going to sound like a stretch, but here is my cynical take on this.

Obama got elected in large part because he is black.
Obama's policies aren't popular, but he is.
He desperately wants to socialize the health care system, but based on the policy itself it isn't going anywhere.
He needs to get the focus turned back to racial injustices in the hopes that the populace will be swayed towards his health care proposal.
He wants to make the health care proposal about him thinking his popularity will push it over the top.

Obama called Gates a friend, and said he doesn't know all the facts of the case.

Like the fact that the guy didn't get arrest until AFTER he stepped out of the house. At that point, he became a PUBLIC nuisance. He was then arrested for disorderly conduct. Even the Pres. plays the card... When folks see their Health insurance companies closing their doors and others realize the President isn't going to pay for their gas and mortgage his popularity will quickly decline.

Yes and when they figure out all these "rich" people who are supposed to be paying for their healthcare with extra taxes are raising the price of what they do to compensate for it and that it's really them who's paying for their own health care his popularity will go down even further.

SF has a 4% tax to pay for health care for employees. When you get your bill at a lot of eateries it has a note that there's a 4% surcharge to pay for it on it. Since I don't like it, I don't eat in SF anymore unless absolutely necessary. When I do I now put a note that your tip has been reduced by 4% because I'm not paying for your health care.
