There were a bunch of reported similarities over the weekend, tracing the train ride of Lincoln for one. Swearing in on the Lincoln Bible when every president has either been sworn in on the Washington Bible or their own family Bible. The little show he put on at the Lincoln Memorial and a couple more little things. So some reporters have been digging around and showing that this isn't just a recent case of idol worship, that in many speeches he brings up Lincoln and how he himself is like Lincoln.

I guess I grew up a bit more humble and modest. If he is like Lincoln, other than the fact that Lincoln was white and a Republican of course, then it is up to history to decide that based on performance. It seems as if he's trying to paint the picture for us. Its kind of spooky. I guess he should be careful how much he patterns himself after Lincoln. As we all remember from history, that didn't work out too well for Lincoln.

Obama is using the bible that Lincoln used during his inaguration. The bible has not been used since Lincoln.

Sadly enough, here in St. Louis, a very popular and historic area of town called Delmar Loop (this is where the famous Blueberry Hill restaurant is that Chuck Berry still performs at and has the walk of famous artists/movie stars/performers from Missouri along the sidewalks) is having it's named changed to Obama Circle from what I recently heard. I can't believe the city and residents voted on a such a drastic change when he hasn't even proven himself as a president.

My theory is that it is just pure politics. Their goal is to brainwash people into believing that Obama is the "savior of the Union", so that anything and everything that he does and says cannot be critically analyzed.

IMO, same thing Bush worked for with his "decider" mechanisms and lack of transparency. Their looking for the same results, just going about it in a different way.

It's hard to think of any recent president that didn't work for the same outcome.

What would be totally awesome is if Obama stood up at the Lincoln Memorial and referenced back to Lincoln as the preeminent student of Jefferson and then declared that as the harbinger of "Change", he would revolutionize the banking industry by repealing the Federal Reserve Act and begin prosecution of Paulson and Bernake.

;)

Obama has always used symbolism as a tool. Remember the DNC convention and the greek columns? Later he was criticized that the ploy was over the top. His posters where created for symbolism. The attempt to use Lincoln is the same, symbolism. It is the same with his call for volunteerism. Symbolism. I'll predict his speech is woven in symbolism.

The reality is that today's problems are much bigger than symbolism and most likely will quickly expose the current administration as part of the problem. The psychological crash of the Obamanuts is going to hurt for decades. Especially true as President Obama's approval rating drops while President Bush's rises.

wow, a new president uses symbolism- how utterly shocking and fake.

I am no Obama cheerleader, but it seems he is doing mostly the same stuff all of them do, what is the big surprise?

He is an American politician, so you can assume
-he will lie often and profusely, as they all have
-he will attempt to control his image as they all have
-etc...

Anyone who assumes he is all that different gives him more credit than he deserves.

My wife just called to comment on the news coverage. She said it's like watching a train wreck. As much as you want to turn away, you just can't help but stare and feel sorry for all these poor people :D

After today I don't want to hear any more from any news outlet about this, "historic inauguration" or "first black president", or any variation thereof. Jeezus, the media just can't get over these details and it just keeps getting mentioned over and over. It would not be that big a deal if the mainstream media didn't make the news for themselves. Enough. Just let the guy become the president and fuck up as badly as all his predecessors.

I'm watching the inauguration and I'm excited for Obama...but I am concerned about the level of celebrity status he is experiencing. That's a lot to live up to and is pretty scary.

I just want him to do a good job and I'm glad the last 8 years are over.

I'd guess he's just trying to be optimistic and have aspirations/dreams to be like one of our historic figure heads of the past.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of this has been fed to him and set-up though.
