I didn't know how bad it was until it got fixed. My '01 Disco 2 was a miserable experience to drive. Two years ago it started having "herky jerky" issues when the cruise control was activated; the transition in and out of throttle was extremely rough. It then became apparent without the cruise on. Thought maybe the accelerator/cruise cables were stretched and tried to adjust them with no improvement. Then it started downshifting when going up fairly steep hills. I had gone from stock (29") tires to 33" tires and attributed the downshifting to the effective "torque loss" due to bigger tires. It got progressively worse, downshifting on milder and milder grades and sometimes on no incline at all. It even started downshiting going DOWN hills. The 3 amigos started coming on more and more often (almost every time it got over 60 mph) eventually accompanied by the M+S lights. Then I would get any sort of combination of lights including the check engine light. It started to stutter on takeoff and occassionally miss at highway speeds. I tuned it up, but that didn't help. The last straw came when it started APPLYING THE BRAKES (!) all on its own at 70 mph. Lovely.

I took it to Ed's Rover service in Franklin, TN. The owner (named Kenny, not Ed) found several codes in the engine, transmission, and abs/body? computers. All three had codes for the Throttle Position Sensor. Hmm. He had a "good used" one laying around and put it on. There were also 10 codes in the body control module where the truck thought it had air suspension on it (it doesn't and as far as I know it never did -- when I put lift springs on it the old ones appeared to be stock). He reconfigured that and cleared all the codes. There were also some references to the shuttle valve in the transmission -- somthing he said might show back up.

It has been driven about 200 miles since and it drives like a dream. Not only does it not shift when going up/down steep inclines, it doesn't even unlock the torque converter -- and speed stays constant. No herky jerky action, no lights. It hasn't driven this well since I bought it.

Just wanted to give a little info to the community and give a bump to Ed's Rover service. They did an outstanding job at a reasonable price. I will update this thread if there are any more issues.

I haven't, but I had a local mechanic hook his Snap-on scanner to it a couple of times. It will read engine codes but that is it -- hardly anyone has the Land Rover module so that their scanner will "talk" to the transmission/body/SLABS -- whatever -- units. He figured there was an ABS module or wheel bearing/speed sensor issue -- which did make sense -- but ultimately not the case. I had my local auto parts contact a couple of companies on their OBDII readers and their tech service indicated that those scanners wouldn't properly read Land Rover codes (other than engine). I may look at getting the new code reader that was recently posted on here if the reviews for it are good.

Thanks - my rover has a unsteady throttle when the cruise contol is on, but it steadies out after a mile or so. I didn't know if this was normal to D2's.

roverMC - your cruise control may need to be reflashed at a dealer. there was a tsb relating to cruise control, I can't remember when. I had to have mine reflashed, fixed the surging in cruise control.

Also, part of the cruise control system is vacuum related, check the lines for any issues, I believe up against the passenger firewall
