Well, I drained the diff and couldn't find the thing. I used a set of telescoping "jaws" and still couldn't get it out. I tried flushing it out but to no avail. It stayed, the diff's filled back up and I've driven it. Nothing exploded.....yet. Just gotta hope for the best.
I ended up taking my front drive shaft to a specialist to have the u-joints replaced on the roto-flexer coupling on the rear of it. $50 bucks to get all 3 replaced (I provided the joints) and the shaft balanced. If your local to Charlotte, it's a little mom and pop shop called Universal Specialist off Cannon Rd. Turn around was 1 day.
Again, thanks for all the advice.
Merry Christmas to all.

Bri, what's the deal with it working down the axle? Is that when I'd be worrying about the bearings?
Man, what a crappy death! One moment's inattention and BAM! Now every time I drive the damn thing, every little noise has me worried!

Don't want to sound like I'm lazy or anything, but I did the same thing with a cap. It stayed in there for about 40,000 miles. Had the 3rd member apart a couple of times - never did find the damn thing. Probably just got pulverized and drained with routine service. Ended up changing the diff for other reasons, but in my case it was harmless.

Your gut is right

You originally asked because you knew you should get it out but is IS only plastic right?. Now you know why. It will bug you until you have it back on the bottle, your pleasure factor is #$#%ed up and it not fun.

Once on a test ride with a LR dealership mechanic, he told me to try and avoid the plastic grocery bags floating across the road if you can. He said you wouldn't believe what those things can do to the drivetrain of the vehicle. They get wrapped around the driveshaft(s) and small slivers get into (insert component he mentioned, but i've forgotten) and tear shit up. Just a little bit of thin, flimsy plastic. FWIW.

Did you shake out your hair and the clothes you were wearing? :)

Oh Rick, you just can't imagine what these guys did to me that left me absolutely frantic and totally sure that my truck was going to disintegrate.

Kevin,
My pleasure. Their phone # is 704-598-7282. I still want to learn how to replace a u-joint but will enlist help vs. figure it out on my own with this truck.

RoverPuppy....??????...are you saying the naysayers had you stressed out over ghosts? I did get a little perturbed with the sarcasm and know-it-all attitude in some of the responses but quickly shook it off. Most here (like you) just want to help.

James, I'm a proud former Marine so the shaking the hair thing is a non-issue :) I did watch the cap shoot right into the filler hole:(

Well, you should be glad to know that your sacrifice was not in vain. I changed my diff fluid last night after the weld-on diff guard install; thanks to you, I kept 10 feet away from the vehicle when removing the caps and cutting the filler tubes. :D

p.s. I only feel safe to bring it up today because the DiscoWeb BB appears to be a ghost town during the holidays, so my chances of being picked on (about the stick) are probably decreased :D

No exaggeration: if I were into politics, I could probably successfully run for the position of "most embarrassed DiscoWeb poster". :)
