Oil consumption seems extreme

Hello everyone,
I am clearly new to the Land Rover experience, but it has become apparent to me that I have a soft spot for troublesome, and persnickety automobiles.
(I also love Volkswagens) Anyhow, to my issue...
I recently had an oil change and lube job done on my 2000 Disco, and a mere 1500 miles later I heard a "tapping" from under my hood, so of course I checked my oil...
Nothing showed on the stick! It took four quarts to bring it up to the low mark!

My truck doesnt smoke, it doesnt smell, and there are no marks on my garage floor.
Where the Hell is all of my oil going?:banghead:
Thank you all in advance for your assistance,
Glen

normally i would say thats normal, but thats way too much oil in 1500 miles. usually a quart is the acceptable amount. it has to be smoking a little, or leaking a little. how many miles?

Maybe the shop you used never put enough in when they changed it. Just keep an eye on it now and see how much it is using. If it doesn't go down much go back to the shop and let them know. Also how many miles on your truck. If it is alot and they put in light weight oil it might be time to move up in weight or add a quart of Lucas. To help slow down consumption. Scott 97XD

That's real extreme. Where did you get your oil changed and what filter was used? Like stated above, keep a sharp eye on it.

My Disco has 134,000 miles, and I brought it to a local Prompto oil change place.
I have brought my vehicles there for quite some time, and am on good speaking terms with many of the employees, so I find it difficult, but not impossible,to believe that they put too little in.
Thank you, and i welcome any more suggestions.

did you put your dip stick in a couple times? flip which way you put it in? the tube is angled and if you dont get it in correct it will sometimes not take a reading, I realize this sounds stupid but i swear thats how mine is, the end of the dipstick is even curved a tad.

Dive under and check your oil filter for thightness. If it aint smokin they most likely forgot to put the oil in. Next time you go there, make sure there's oil by checking the dipstick prior to leaving the parking lot. Miscommunication will make some pretty stupid stuff take place.

Yes I checked the dip-stick a couple of times, and put it in at a few different angles.
Rovers aint the only car to have that problem, and I think Ive owned all of the others! haha

Also, I agree that miscommunication can lead to disastrous things...like my first two marriages!! (oy vey!)

A brief update...
I am now caught between the used car lot that sold me the Disco, and a land Rover dealership, as they fight over who will pay for the diagnostics, as well as the labor to repair my "oil well in reverse"!
One says its a simple head gasket job, the other swears its an internal leak in my engine, roughly equivilant to the seventh plane of hell.
I am desperately trying to focus on my "happy place"
This is all turning to poop in a hurry.
Wish me luck,
Glen
